Ok, just had the first awkward interaction with the new neighbor...
Him: "The bass..!"
Me: "Bad news man..."

I am on the third floor. 12 x 14 room. 8" monitors are currently facing out from the corner of the room (:?), a corner that is on an outside wall of the building. Old east coast usa construction.

I have tons of sound foam for the walls, and foam for monitors to sit on.
I dont have anything like an actual basstrap atm...
Im a little familiar with how to treat the sound inside the room. My listening spot is dialed in, but I dont know what to do about this.

Does anyone have any tips on speaker placement to limit how the bass is traveling to the neighbors underneath?

Here is a somewhat scale drooring of the room;

The circles be the boom. They are sitting on foam wedges that are on shelves that are on my desk.

Im now wondering how much of it is resonating down through the desk... Never thought about that before.
What about hanging the monitors from the ceiling..?

On a side note; Its fukking Wendesday @ 6pm! And I was only at about 70% of my 'average' volume!
He is at least five years younger than me ffs...
Ah dammit its not going to go well. :x

:)
Thanks for any tips, links, jokes, etc. :D

Just get the guy a girl, and some nice tunes to bang on. He'll appreciate the bass, it's just a matter of time. :D

I'm no expert in eliminating sound issues as these, but yes, speakers on a desk will resonate harder (the desk actually). You might try to see if that's it by seeing if leaning or sitting on the desk makes the problem less noticeable.
Also, you could try to fill up the bassport of the speakers with some foam. I also would try to see if stuffing some foam in the corner between the walls helps.
And a last word of warning, I'm just guessing here, wait for more knowledgable members to chime in before you try any of these suggestions ;)

Good luck!

as long as youre not cranking it up to 11, or playing in the middle of the night, or disturbing a hot chick, to hell with him.

Well weekend is coming so boundaries will be tested... :D

We've already established that those boundaries aren't soundproof right? ;)

Yep that much is confirmed. :)

This second round of testing will not be for purposes of measuring the properties of the physical phenomena, but be designed to explore the subjects psyche and determine if there are exploitable emotional weaknesses. :P
