So does mine. And because it takes one to know one, I am pretty sure. However the most noble thing to do if you are not one is of course to grant "the noob" the benefit of doubt.Gamma-UT wrote:Could be noob. But my troll detector is pinging away merrily right now...

I completely agree with the bit about being humble (yes, we all started out knowing nothing once upon a time). But I disagree about the arrogance. That is always ugly, destructive and unnecessary. I work with doctors every day, so I get used to arrogance from certain quarters, and it doesn't make me respect them more. In fact that arrogance makes me despise them, despite how much study they've done. I haven't met one single surgeon I actually like and it's exactly because of a general arrogance that surgeons in particular cultivate. They're glorified barbers (read up on the history of surgery) that think being called "Mr" is cool. Arseholes are arseholes no matter what they do. You have to earn respect because of who you are and what you do, not how loud you can shout. So even musicians who have platinum discs haven't earned the right to be arrogant. Proud is different to arrogant. I have no problem with being proud of one's achievements. Arrogance deserves every response it usually draws...AstralExistence wrote:dont get me wrong though, there's nothing wrong with being arrogant if you have busted your ass learning your craft, be it a doctor, physicist, lawer, or producer. but lets stay humble about the fact that we all had to start somewhere.

And as for the previous pages with tiffs about asking silly questions and laziness. Where I work, if you get something sometimes even slightly wrong, people can end up dying. When a newb Dr or nurse asks me a question (no matter how silly it may initially seem) I am relieved, and I try to make a point of answering helpfully and encouragingly. Because as I tell all the new ones - I'd rather they ask and then get it right, than struggle on because arrogant dickheads (like Jancivil seems to support) get pissed when they ask. When newb Drs and nurses just make shit up and don't ask (because they're frightened to), that's when it gets real serious and usually it's the patient that suffers.
The answer to silly questions generally reflects more on the person answering than the other way around. THere's humour, and there's putting people down just because you can, and because it makes you feel superior (which generally is ugly). Nobody dies if you make bad music - in other fields that really is not so.
When somebody presses the emergency bell in a ward and I have to run half way across the bleedin' hospital to get to something that isn't really an emergency, I never ever bollock anyone for pressing the bell. I tell them well done for recognising they didn't know what was going on, well done for pressing the bell and above all for asking for help. And then if applicable I'll do some education if appropriate. Simply because I don't like running. But if I displayed jancivils reaction, I suspect once or twice I'd arrive to dead patients too late.
Music's like any other walk of life - you don't have to be a shit to deal with people.

That's a great attitude! If there were more physicians with this attitude, less patients would be dying because of medical malpractice!kritikon wrote:And as for the previous pages with tiffs about asking silly questions and laziness. It's the arrogance that kills many people in this world because someone claims to have a surgical knowledge that in reality he/she doesn't have.
BTW, do you work as a doctor? Then the music (production) must be a good balancing for you, because with music you can't endanger a patient's life (but you can cure patients with music!).

and then about half an hour later, a bump:

You know what is truly great about forums like this though? They are a true democracy. Anyone can sign up and any one can help anyone else with a question. You can even answer someone's potentially silly and asinine question with respect and dignity even if the "correct" response is to call that person an uninitiated asshat and then go on your merry way! It's really quite brilliant. We are all very free here to be as insidious or cordial as we desire.
On one side we have really funny threads where every gets a good hearty laugh at someone's expense. On the other side we have noobs that eventually find enough viable targeted information that they stop being noobs and start being the people that join in on the merriment when a forum-rookie makes yet another misstep. Circle of life. Or fifths, or whatever it is called.
I'm not going to say I haven't opened a thread like this and immediately had a good giggle at some poor soul's take on audio or what-have-you. But at some point you do realize many of these people simply honestly don't know where to start...
Potent words. Well said.

He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.
This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

I'm trying hard atm to master, though use in a barely acceptable way would be a better term, a video making program to make some tutorials/
During the first hours I remember I was just NOT able to move a video clip on the time line
, or how to add simple titles
etc , and I felt miserable like the complete lost noob I was.... just some months ago. I had to scratch my hair and google for endless hours to accomplish the most basic and obvious tasks.
So I can totally understand how some people can feel when they open a "daw" for the first time, have to install "plug ins" to make "a sound", then configure midi and audio settings, then etc etc.
We have completely forgotten how complex these programs are, because we use them on a dayly basis.
We still all are noobs in some fields, we cant master everything. And help from more knowledgeable people is always appreciated, and a real time saving.
Let's all remember that.

Today the Internet makes it look like there are shortcuts to success but really, there isn't. You still need years to truly understand what you're doing, no matter what information source one chooses. Reading is pointless without putting it into practice over and over again, everyday, learning never ends.
