IK Multimedia SampleTank and Sonik Synth 2
Steinberg HalionSonic
I have only SS2 and ST free, both are good. I have read mixed reviews for HalionSonic. I am not aware of any free workstation type synth. However, ST has a free version with limited soundset. Check out their website for prices and other details.

WusikStation maybe? lots of offers and second hand copies so cheap as chips. Lots of samples, but I have no idea how good they are...

A workstation in hardwareland means having a synth/rom/sample engine of some kind and a means to record and edit parts and such, thus, a sequencer. Since most of us work happily in a DAW we might not need the latter. Hence my question, what do you define by workstation VST? Multi timbrality?

Besides the KORGs (M1, WAVESTATION), first classic workstation VSTi that springs to mind is Purity by Luxonix.
Low price, low CPU, great sound, an extremely versatile 5-track 64-step sequencer, etc., get demo here.

just tried this. it definitely no korg. are you the developer? don't want to sound rude. but it lacks the silky smooth sound the m1 has.

Gteat sample library and diverse synth engine. Could be the only sampler you ever need.

I'm really enjoying Halion Sonic at the moment. The samples + VA are top notch. I'm actually surprised to find the VA engine so powerful with each oscillator wave having options like sync, cross-mod, ring-mod. Another unexpected user friendly design is how much 'drag and drop' is possible inside the HS UI. For example, drag an FX module to any slot I desire, or re-arrange the performance assignments by doing the same. Nice!
I just miss a comb filter plus more sources/modifiers in the mod matrix.
