I've decided to get an iPod touch specifically for apps such as JamUp, Guitar Rig and AmpKit. I'm trying to save as much money as possible. Should I go for the 3rd Gen iPod Touch or stick with the 4Gen with its faster processor?

Definitely 4th for more power. The more powerful it is, the better it can handle FX and recording. Not to mention future updates or apps you may want to try out. Also Guitar Rig is not available on iOS, but AmpliTube is.

Don't know if it's what you're referring to but in case you haven't seen the press the speculation is that there will be an "ipad mini" released by the end of the year that will be a 7" version of the ipad. It's meant to compete with the nexus and kindle so pricing is (again rumored) to be $200-$300.... I've never owned an apple device of any kind but if the price point holds this could be my first (just for the music making apps).conundrum wrote:Wait for the one that they will/should release in September.

How about a used ipad 1st gen. Seeing them for about $250-$300. I assume they're fast enough.

I thought the same for a while and ended up with buying a used 4th gen 32G ipod touch for about 200$ (160€). I haven't been able to test it yet because the Ampkit link which I bought was DOA. I have experience from the pc world with Amplitube and Overloud which are both very good to my ears - I have actually not used any of my amps lately so this is going to be interesting when I get my working interface. Good hedphones are a must. And I'm waiting for the perhaps-coming Apple mini tablet if it's reasonably priced (why I bought a used one for testing).

I forgot about the iPad mini rumors. I think, I'll wait to see they turn out to be true. If it ends up costing the same as the Nexus 7, I will definitely get that. If not, then I guess Ill just get the next generation iPod touch.

Between the 3rd and 4th, go for 4th.
Here is a good comparison chart, look for anything at least 1GHz, that will serve the future better.

If you end up with Ipod, don't buy Ampkit link. I've got two of them and neither is working. They sure are cheap and I don't have hours of time to struggle with a product like this.

AmpliTube iRig is a great option and if you prefer something active for a lower signal to noise ration the upcoming iRig Stomp will fit the bill perfectly.

Is the iRig Stomp geared towards passive electric pickups or does it work "as well" with acoustic pickups or Active electric guitar pickups?
Man, times must be tough if we're going to "signal to noise rationing".

Well I went ahead and bought an iPod Touch 4G from Best Buy two weeks ago. Bought Amplitube and JamUp Pro Xt and really enjoyed the apps. However since Apple just announced new iPod touches I decided to return it and wait for the new ones.
Anyway, the only annoying thing about using an iPod Touch as an amp is that it keeps dropping to the floor when I lay it on my desk. Any ideas or products I can use to keep it in one place?
