Hey everybody! I've made another 'utility' plugin. It's called DualPanner.

Image

DualPanner is a simple stereo panning plugin for your DAW or VST host. It is available for FREE in VST2.4 and VST3 on computers running Microsoft Windows 32-bit or 64-bit.

Features include:
* Independent left/right panning for both channels of a stereo signal.
* Slider solo
* Stereo Width mode
* Pan law control

Thanks to Lights Fade Low for the idea and testing of this plugin!

Download it here:

If anyone has any questions/comments/suggestions/etc.. feel free to post them here. :)

Thanks everybody!

Hm... since i have such a feature in Cubase already, it's still a nice idea.

Another concept that i'd like to explore however, is with Reapers "dual panners" and specifically the "White Imperial" skin, where the panner (global and L/R independent) seems to be locked to 15 degree steps rather than unlimited.

What's your thought on that, Dustin?

Isn't that something which is available at any DAW? Are there still DAW's without dual panning and pan law adjustment? :?:

Post

Thanks :)

A Cubase user on another forum was looking for a dual-panner that they could place anywhere in the signal chain. The math is easy enough so I whipped this one up and thought I'd release it for everyone.

I've never experienced the 15 degree steps in REAPER and themes can't affect the behavior of the controls so I'm not sure what's going on there. I can see the usefulness though! If that's something people would like to see and would use in this plugin, I can definitely add it in.

Which 15 degree steps in REAPER are you talking about? For me it's only one click in REAPER...:wink:

I put my mouse pointer over the pan knob, click the right mouse key and then I get a window with all adjustable pan laws and pan modes, even Dual Panning...

Sorry that part was a response to Compyfox's post. REAPER is great and has been my main DAW for about 5 years now :)

It might still come handy, even though I'm using Reaper, too, and Reaper's panning is quite good and flexible. Well, I could use it in EnergyXT1 ;) It's actually perfect for it!

Thanks Dustin!

I'm the Cubase user who asked for this plugin. And the reason is that the planner in Cubase is rigidly stuck after all the pre-fader inserts and I want to control panning at another point in the signal chain. There are some horrendous work-arounds like routing one channel into another, but the best solution is to have a planner plugin that you can place in any of the pre-fader ineserts as needed. For me, this isn't an esoteric need and will be used on many tracks in every project since I use a dual micing technique for all my vocals and then blend the two using different EQ settings on left and right channels and then use Dustin's panner to combine the two into a single 'hybrid' dynamic/condenser mic before further processing.

Regarding the 15 degree panning thing, well I saw this on the Imperial White custom skin for Reaper and thought it's a regular feature. Actually, on this skin it's shown in 25 degree steps. Still intereting though to have it "locked" rather than free.

I also like the Stereo Pan and width mode there.

Actually... why not port the Reaper ideas over into your plugin for all hosts to use? Along with a degree locked panning mode (which would remind me of very old days: L/M/R only, think REDD.51 console)?

Here's the Imperial theme, mid-right is a GIF with the panning modes:

@lights:
Ever thought of micing in M/S mode? Granted, not different EQ for blending, but another attempt at sound design? Or... why not mount the mics in X/Y for best mono compatibility, leave the panning centered then add suitable EQ per channel and blend with the volume fader (then route to a mono group for further EQ/compression)?

The reason I use 2 mics is not to deliver a stereo signal, but to get the very best qualities of both a tube LDC and a dynamic. Think of it as me building one 'super mic' out of two mid-priced ones. Have aligned perfectly the capsules of both an SM7b running through a Golden Age Pre73 mk2 and a Stellar CM-6 running through a Focusrite ISA-One.

The SM7+GAP73 combination is a phenomenal mid-to-high-mid mic and has phenomenal articulation but lacks sparkle and air at the top and the nice proximity bass effect.

The Stellar+ISA combination has a crystal clear top end and great frequency range but LDCs can be a bit harsh and sibilant in the mid-high range when recorded straight-on do instead I have it above the SM7 and angled down to the singer's chest.

So I record them in a stereo track but never intend for them to be stereo. I use the Ozone 5 component EQ to blend the best of each together and then Dustin's dual panner to center both channels before hitting Nectar. I used this technique first on Hurricane (http://lightsfadelow.com/track/hurricane) and the vocals came out great. Still refining the process to make it even better.

another cool looking tool! thanks a lot.
Finally!

It's true, right-clicking on the pan knobs in Reaper brings up dual panning and other options. I've never used dual panning for anything so this is something I'll have to explore.

Dustin, can you elaborate on what the "width mode" does?

I love Dual Panning... It's great for mid to high freq content, for example for some oriental percussion or triangles, or delayed arps, or even some background choir or vocals etc. I wouldn't use it for bass (except if you make an UFO song), but it has some great areas of application.:)
