Reaper Updates?

imo people shouldn't hold any delusions about MIDI being updated in Reaper. Either use what exists now or use a different DAW. If MIDI does get improved it will be a pleasant surprise for all, but don't waste your rage and angst on Cockos, clearly MIDI is not a high priority for them.

But I don't WANT to switch apps. Simple as that. I know it doesn't lead to happiness, either way.Astromann wrote:I see ED sounds fairly pissed about not having this and that, well there is a simple answer ED...simply switch apps and be happy (for a while)

Hey, c'mon...midi isn't that bad in Reaper. I mean, I just mastered over 30 (personal) songs that I converted from Cubase (all instrument tracks were midi) and I could do everything I wanted to do. Granted, I don't use any of the following:
* Poly aftertouch
* Logical editor
* Note off velocity
* Drum maps
* event list
From a purely personal/professional standpoint I think Reaper is perfectly adequate for midi. The only thing I would like to see expanded/enhanced is the PiP (project in project) feature for sections/parts management...but I don't need it.
If you are used to any those features from another editor, I think it is worthwhile to get used to the Reaper workflow and then shape it into something you can live with (or vice versa).
I wonder if the majority of complaints are from a pro-engineer perspective? I can imagine that you would have a difficult time wading through customer project files without some of those features listed above.

My complaints stem from the fact that EVEN MIDI received some updates from time to time in the first 2 years I owned the product. In the last 7+ months NOTHING.
So no it's not a professional pov here. Ymmv.

Since this discussion came up YET AGAIN with typical bullshit results over at reaper I'm just bumping this in frustration.hibidy wrote:My complaints stem from the fact that EVEN MIDI received some updates from time to time in the first 2 years I owned the product. In the last 7+ months NOTHING.

People took the time to address the lack of midi updates, some people made some terrific arguments, some fanbois' squacked, one of the devs came in with a "we will work on it" (which I'm not feeling confident about
HOW ABOUT JUST DO SOMETHING TO HELP MIDI USERS!
*sigh*
Oh well, ima be pissed but there is nothing I can do about it. Waste of time. Thanks for letting me vent.

That was a quite interesting conversation indeed.
Historically, Ivan and I were both where ED is but we both kinda moved more into the "whatever happens" acceptance phase. ED really doesn't want to use another midi sequencer so he's really frustrated. I eased my personal frustration by just not really using Reaper for midi.
Those regular midi discussions are like watching people go through the various stages of drug rehab.

For those saying that Reaper gets no MIDI updates, go here: http://www.reaper.fm/whatsnew.txt Hit ctrl+F and highlight MIDI. (That first date should read 2013, not 2012, btw. Hard to remember that new year change.)
Keep in mind that Reaper consists of 3 devs, and I can understand why Justin might want to keep the team small, or be very picky about bringing in someone new. Also, just guessing here, but I think that Justin isn't so much of a MIDI guy, which probably makes it harder to decide on where time should really be spent on MIDI development. I don't know about you guys, but I have made my fair share of not so great feature requests to software developers, seeing some of them implemented, only to realize it was a bad idea down the road.
That said, I'm not making excuses for the rate of Reaper's MIDI development. I have no stake in it, other than knowing that Cockos has been a good company. Better than most, imo. And I hate to see them get unfairly shat upon over a handful of feature requests. Where I think they could really make some improvement is in communicating more on the forums. Earlier on in Reaper's development, it seemed like Cockos was more communicative.

Really? I wouldn't know
Honestly though, I stay out of fight club areas other than the occasional check to see what is cooking. People are rabid and they worry about things that don't matter (like bitching about the lounge all day, just stay out of it ffs, it's password encrypted so nobody NEED venture there

MIDI updates in Reaper seem to be just re-doing the paintwork rather than fixing the engine. I mean, yes, you get a million updates, but none of them are relevant to the really fundamental underlying MIDI issues that desperately need overhauling.
I used to think the "Elevated Feature Requests" area was where requests go to be implemented.
I now know it's where they go to die...

The Reaper Forums are very informative regarding this topic. I enjoy reading many of the Sub-Forums .
