Without a laptop, are there any ways to copy audio files between any suitable apps or are we entirely dependent on the developers including the 'copy to buffer' function i found in a few of them.

And, not that i'm considering it an option, but once you've exported to soundcloud, how do you import back into the app?

The apps which offer export to itunes.. I have to connect to a computer to import them back into an app? Or something?

So, for example, i bounce a beat in tweakybeat, copy it to the buffer (can't remember the exact terminology). I can paste it into garageband, but how do i import into, say, SunVox, which only sees its own local file system?

Are there any generalisations which can be applied to the whole 'copying files within ios apps' thing.. ?

Try Audioview....works pretty good, especially for apps that don't play well with ACP in other

It would appear what you desire is coming.

It seems like you already know the answer. Without a laptop/desktop you're pretty much limited to apps supporting Audio Copy.
For the moment...
Audiobus is coming, but developers have to implement it in their apps.
And iOS6 is supposed to have Audiobus-like functionality built-in.

Wow - it does appear that my dreams have been answered (although I didn't _actually_ dream about this functionality..)

Didn't get AudioView in the end despite Derek's recommendation - it didn't appear to offer 'record any app' functionality, as far as I could see.

Looking forward to this though.. :)

The key issue here is that each application is very carefully sandboxed to prevent viruses and maintain OS stability. Apple chose to further make it difficult for hackers by not providing a decent file manager for users. Instead, they made a search function that allows the OS to find files within the system.

It is a double-edged sword really. The system truly is more protected from a virus than non-sandboxed operating systems. The problem is, that it is difficult to have decent inter-app transfer.

As mentioned, Audiocopy/paste and Audiobus are making huge steps toward allowing users working with audio to get around this. However, it doesn't resolve any problems with other types of files. You can use iTunes connected to your computer, which is what any person trying to break free from the computer dependency will tell you isn't an option. You can email yourself the file to get it out of your system (This is one that I love to hate!) :-)
Or, you can use "Open-in" function, coupled with a couple of powerful file managers and some cloud storage, and avoid the problem completely. Another great possibility is using the built-in WIFI servers in some of these File Manager apps.

I have a couple of powerful file managers that use the Open-in function (that is built into most applications), and along with the cloud-based storage like Dropbox, Skydrive, or Google Drive, allow me to do nearly everything I need to do with the iPad.

Your best bet with iOS file management, would be to make use of a combiniation of these tools: ie AudioCopy/Paste, Audiobus, Filemanager/cloud management, etc. It's a little clunky compared to more open systems, but there is less fear of getting a virus.

Personally, I sometimes wonder if the virus protection & system stability that is gained by using iOS is worth the hassle of dealing with jumping through hoops to get to the files that I want to use. I have a system that works, but I honestly don't really like having to do it.

Then again, I've never (not even once) had to connect my iPad to a computer. I've been able to do everything within the box using the tools that I mentioned.

If anyone is interested, I could point out a couple of very useful File Managers that are available from the app store. No jailbreaking needed. :-)

Seconded. I use ifile and ifile explorer (I think that's what it's called), but can't completely wrap my head around them. The file manager is probably the one thing from android that I miss.

Is there any file manager ios app that let's you sync specific folders within all or some of your idevices ?

maybe I do not get the problem. But there is the DocumentInteractionController -you know, the one that lets you open images, books, pdfs in different apps from other apps. the same should be possible with audio, no?

of course, apps need to support it, but then they register with the system to be able to open audio files and should be fine. what am I missing?

Sorry it's taking so long guys. It's my week "On Call" after business hours at work, and I've been being run ragged. I'll try to post a decent post to clarify this mess of a post, as soon as I get a chance, but for now, look into the following:

* Stratospherix -- FileBrowser (Supposed to be very powerful. I got it for using my computer like an unlimited cloud drive. I haven't used it yet, and may look into i-FunBox for the same but easier use.)

* Imagam -- iFiles (I use this one a lot because of its great cloud integration)

* The iFile that mrufino1 mentioned above is supposedly one of the best ones, but it comes in 2 versions (appstore version and the more powerful version that requires a jailbreak. I don't have this app--either version).

* i-FunBox (Supposedly one of the best ones out there and I may just get this one soon. This is a little like FileBrowser but with more--I think. I'll need to look into this further)

* iMoreApps -- Media Downloader (Everyone needs a great downloader!)

* The essential Dropbox, Google Drive, and SkyDrive apps.

The best thing to do, is to use a combination of apps to accomplish your file management needs. I store all of my files in iFiles. I download from Media Downloader. I offload or access files to/from cloud-based apps.

Additional tools I use:

* Splashtop (remote desktop made easy)
* File converter -- a good tool for emergencies
* iSwifter (Flash browser that handles my Flash-based needs)
* AudioShare -- a good audio file browser
* PDF Printer -- Never print another document again! :-)

So, in short--I use iFiles, Media Downloader, DropBox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, Splashtop, File Converter, iSwifter, AudioShare, and PDF Printer. I have never needed to hook my iPad up to iTunes in the entire time I've had it. I'm constantly on the lookout for useful apps, and because there are so many out there, I likely don't have the best apps, and will benefit from what everyone else uses as well. :-)

I'm off to bed. :-)

Use Dropbox (or any other similar app) that allows for sync'ing. With DropBox, there is a utility that runs in the system tray of your Mac or Desktop, and likewise, there is an iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch app, and an Android app. These apps all synchronize so that what you have in your DropBox, is available in all of your devices. There are several services that do this, but DropBox is the most popular.

All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.

This looks a bit like my answer...

I wish I could do without iTunes...
And iFunBox can't transfer files by wireless (I need wifi because my dock connector is in use by an Alesis IO Dock) :?
