If you think FL Studio is Hard To Understand, you should try Usine; it will broad your ideas about what "Hard To Understand" is
.
Eventually something intelligent will appear written here. Watch this space.

Agree. On the surface (once you get your audio devices setup anyway) it's pretty intuitive. It can be a bit less intuitive at times later on though because of the huge preference page, but I agree, the basic recording and production stuff and a really good level of staus feedback is mosty all right there on the arrange page.ttoz wrote:Cubase is very intuitive. I picked it up within 24 hrs and would dare say was even GOOD with it in that time.
Cubase (imo) excels during those times when you can maximize the arrange page and just work. Not so much when there are normalized windows floating all over the place.

Hi
I have had FL since the very early days and like many other here, have found it to be counter intuitive ... to me.
Every time a new version comes out I give it another shot and, well you guessed!
I have spent time reading the manuals, downloading and watching the video tutorials...
Because you can't sell it there will no doubt be many people in the same boat as the years go on - who knows, perhaps a rethink come V28?
Honestly though, you get a hell of lot for your money, if you like the thing.

Without a doubt the most unintuitive and trickiest music app I've ever come across, but tried my hardest to gel with it and even bought a copy as people were saying it was so fab with MIDI etc, but even after learning how to use it find it too awkward and cumbersome. Maybe not surprising since FL has grown out of a simple and happy (fruity loops) drum step sequencer and looper, but when even today you're presented with the most basic of step sequencers as the main writing tool it is just bizarre to be honest, as is to be forced to write using patterns only. Even Image Line knows this is not ideal as the demo song that automatically opens with the demo and purchased versions in order to showcase the program is track based and linear, not pattern based hehe..

Yes. I thought that I would like it as I used to work almost exclusively with pattern based hardware sequencers. I found, however, when I moved to software, that although EDM is largely pattern based it's much easier to think in a hybrid pattern/linear mode. In fact, I found that a lot of the problems that I was having were largely driven from being too pattern oriented.V'ger wrote:Tried my hardest to gel with FL and even bought it as people were saying it was so fab, but find it awkward and cumbersome too. Personally, I think that ableton and props offer the best hybrid solutions.

The Pianoroll grid value wants to be different from the rest of the world and I can't get used to it.
The rest is fine once you commit to it and hold until it clicks with you, and it will with or without the manual.
Just keep going and soon or later you see why it still around.
Not my first to go daw at all, but quite intriguing in its depth as far as I could understand by practice and tons of great videos available on YouTube.
I don't know why I keep following the upgrades.... (Free?
) or waiting for a miracle in the workflow paradigm.

I think the FL dev's are super creative and I really like alot about the program. but keeping the old fruity loops step sequencer as the point of entry into the software is a mistake--it is incredibly unintuitive. Yhe loop work flow is unique and will throw some--but give it a chance by replacing the step sequencer interface with something more intuitive--make it clear this is where you create instruments...mmm..generators, and that each instrument will have a loop track. I also think its time to part with the HR giger transport design and faux sound wave electo pulse. C'mon.
The design of FL intruments and fx is great. Why can't they apply that flair to the aging core interface.

This right-click behaviour is what makes the piano roll/playlist so quick.
After using FL, I can't stand DAWs where one must choose another tool and/or select something before deleting it.
I'd go as far as to say FL Studio has the best right-click functionality of any application I've ever used. Innovation. Of course it's still used (normally) for sub-menus where appropriate.
I'm very biased though

I've found FLS super easy to use. I've been with it, since 7.

The new live features look really good, have not tried them yet. FLS seems to get better with each update.hibidy wrote:It's not hard to use, but it's really deep and perplexing from a linear standpoint. First time I've given it a real go in ages.

As I stated elsewhere, I too am re-familiarizing myself with it, after a very long hiatus. Like 10+ years. actually a bit longer than that, as I Had a PIII-500Mhz w/(OMG!!!) 128Mb of ram...abstractcats wrote:The new live features look really good, have not tried them yet. Anyway, I hadn't played with it more than twice since I finally bought it a couple of years ago, simply because it had "SM" built in, AND I wanted to try some of the synths in their 'native' environment.
REALLY glad I did, as the "affiliate" thing, allowed me to get Harmor and Sakura for under $40.00, total.
Pretty cool.
Some really great tips/tricks in this thread, which might be obvious to those with experience, but not to everyone, so thanks to those who have stayed on topic.
