For those who like their warm cinematic string pads I think you'll like this...
Hot off the press, made with an old TX802 FM Synth fed quite hot into one of my active tube EQs for extra body and top end.
It's arranged as a dual octave swell and quite responsive to playing style.

Lovely pad. Thanks for sharing.
I just recently pulled out my old faithful SY99 for exactly this kind of pads. No soft synth comes close enough to those wobbly fm pads from the hardware (esp. with higher fm mod amounts).
Cheers,
Gerald

Many thanks, you might want to see my Minimoog Harp Arpeg too - in fact it layers rather nicely with this pad.pocvecem wrote:Lovely pad. Thanks for sharing.![]()

After years of being shunned for analog it seems classic digital synthesis is making a come back.
The SY99 is an underrated synth often let down by it's factory presets. I have an SY77 in the studio, both are very powerful pieces of kit but neither have found that much love over the years considering they were flagship synths.
The TX802 is probably one of the best classic pure 6OP implementations around and it's nice to see this unit is starting to gain a new generation of users.
Someone recently posted a decent demo of this old beast on YouTube:
It's actually very encouraging to see some are (re)discovering FM - a good 6OP implementation is a powerful source of material as a starting point for samples, complex layers and driving the front end of an analog chain. Many producers over the years have used FM as a secret weapon in adding bite to analog sounds.
FM can be cold but being such a powerful source of harmonics opens up interesting possibilities when fed into analog filters and effects.
By far the most positive attribute of FM synthesis is it's ability to respond to real time parameters.

I'm thinking about getting a TX802 or a TG77 at the moment to expand the number of voices. 16 voices (or 8 voices with layering) is not that much and i hate multimode. I always liked Yamaha's fm synths for their very organic and dynamic clavi/piano type sounds and the pads.
A very neglected feature of the SY77/99 is to use a sampled waveform as 7th fm operator. There are almost no presets that make use of that feature. I also still have a box with 250+ (!) floppies with samples for the SY99. It was my main workstation 20 years ago and it amazing how many short samples you can get into 3 (yes, three!) megabytes of ram.
Five years ago i completely turned to making music with software only. This summer i started to refurbish my old gear. The SY needed a new display backlight, new batteries and a complete cleaning. It even got some fresh paint. Now i have a cool custom black SY99. Then followed a new display backlight and power supply for my Wavestation.
In fact i'm enjoying my new old hardware synths that much that i decided to get more. I got a Kawai K5000S and two Waldorf MicrowaveXT wich i think are the best sounding synths i ever had. When i have enough money left again i will look for a Microwave I and a Q+ keyboard.
Ok, will download the Minimoog Harp Arpeg now. Thanks again for these samples.
