How come "Hardware" VA's 16 years ago sounded so good like the AN1x and now....

Actually, jupiter8, AN1x is REALLY low on aliasing. I can make a hardsync sound and play it way up high and there won't be any aliasing there, which can't be said for a lot of VSTs...

I'm playing 10 notes in the DIVA demo and the Task Manager is showing 32% of my modest Q66OO (multi-threaded turned on)..........ttoz wrote:
ok 10 voices diva stil takes a core of a 4ghz i7 though, i don't think An1x had 4ghz in it
Like someone mentioned before the AN1X is not also running FireFox, a Firewall and AntiVirus software etc..........

What are you talking about, I'm running Linux on my AN1X.

And according to this the CS2X is a sample based synth...............ttoz wrote:the cs2x was the one with 64 voices..

But can you play Battlefield 2 on it?EvilDragon wrote:What are you talking about, I'm running Linux on my AN1X.

Take into consideration that DSP's in hardware audio solutions use much less power. Here's the power consumption of UAD-2 cards:ttoz wrote:Timfonie wrote:I'll add one more reason.
Hardware VA's usually run largely on dedicated Digital Signal Processors (DSP chips). These are far less flexible than the General CPU's we have in our PC's but they are also much more efficient. You can compare it with the graphical power of a video card versus that of the CPU itself.
Of course that's only a small part of the explanation. Modern day CPU's easily crunch those old and not so old DSP's.
But that would mean UAD could do more plugins than native, and it can't.. Just to use a fair different but similar example.
UAD-2 Solo: 3.5 Watts
UAD-2 Duo: 5 Watts
UAD-2 Quad: 7 Watts
That's about only 1 watt per DSP core.
These cards came to market in 2008. Their SHARC DSP's run on a much lower clock frequency (400 MHz or less) and have an older chip manufacturing process than state of the art Intel microprocessors in 2008 (like 130nm vs. 45nm).
Now imagine a many-core SHARC DSP fabricated at 45nm with a power consumption of 100 Watt. Or an UAD-card with one hundred of the current SHARC DSP's. Both will likely yield dozens times more power for plugins.
My bet would be on specialized DSP audio cards, not on general purpose CPU's as the plugin-power winner.
The more I hang around at KVR the less music I make.

According to Urs' own words, even Diva can alias like a mofo in some cases.

its all very well imagining it, but the reality is that (a) DSP processors do not have the rapid turnover in performance increases that general-purpose CPU's do and (b) devices based on DSP processors are static platforms, and do not have the rapid turnover in architecture that general-purpose computers do.Timfonie wrote:Now imagine a many-core SHARC DSP fabricated at 45nm with a power consumption of 100 Watt. The end result is that even if available DSP power for a product leapfrogs the comparitive available CPU power on a general-purpose system, the gap will be closed, then reversed in favour of the general-purpose system, almost always before the end-of-life of the product, let alone the development of a replacement.
Specialised DSP audio cards are too small a market to win.

I'm just pointing out it's possible to get huge synth sounds out of a modest CPU. Sounds that the AN1X could not possibly make so I'm not as concerned about the number of CPU cycles required as I am the complexity and quality of the sounds I can create these days......Like I said we are in the Golden Age of Synthesis. Not only do we still have the old hardware boxes to use if so desired but we also have Computer Based synths that take sound design into the 21st Century.......ttoz wrote:Teksonik wrote:I'm playing 10 notes in the DIVA demo and the Task Manager is showing 32% of my modest Q66OO (multi-threaded turned on)..........ttoz wrote:

yeah.. i said of a CORE...
that means the 10 voices is using more than a 2.4ghz core in your case guesstimate 3ghz, and that was a typo, i meant 3ghz i7 not 4. sigh. I can't win.
are you using diva in divine mode or draft?
Oh and I was using the DIVA demo in "Great" mode........
