They are clearly NUTS with such pricing.
considering most people on this site can qualify for the competitive upgrade for $395 how is this price out of line?
How much would it be to buy ProTools,Cubendo,Ableton or Studio One2 etc....?
If you were expecting Reaper pricing that's not gonna happen, how do you guys not think a cross platform full featured DAW for $395 is crazy pricing?
After you get on board than upgrades like I just did are $195,essentially the price of Logic which charges all users the same price even if they're upgrading.
How much are the other DAW's Protools(not LE)Cubendo,Ableton ,Studio One2?again not lite versions?

Logic is cheaper but Apple sells it as a loss leader, knowing it will sell hardware & offer no cross-grade or upgrade pricing as far as I know.
2012 Mac Pro,3.46 Ghz,12 core 96g ,Mojave,RME, DP11.01, Logic 10.51,RME UCX, Great River ME-1NV, a few microphones,Spectrasonics, U-he Komplete12U & way too many VI's,Synths & FX galore!, UAD,Mimic Pro/SD3,Focal Twin 6 monitors, Shunyata ....

The pricing may not be out of line if they offer a demo. I can't even imaging spending around $400 without a demo.. I am really happy they ported to windows though!!

Post

Full version $795 is rather steep but it is MOTU's choice and they know what they are doing business wise. If for some reason I were intrested then could somebody answer this one for me and thank you in advance - If one goes for the 'competetive upgrade' option does it require the user to ditch whichever DAW they are currently using and obviously using to 'upgrade' from? Simply because I have never done a crossgrade 'upgrade' deal and have no idea how they work. Sorry if this question seems like a dumb one but it is genuine :)

Cheers and all the best

Yea, Competitive upgrade, from what? There's no list or explanation any where.
A minor scale is a major scale starting 3 half steps down from the major and visa versa. Any Chord has as many versions as it has notes.

I actually mentioned to the lead developer last week that having a demo would IMO be a great move, believe me they're hearing it from multiple sides and who knows at 1 point they might offer some kind of demo.but for now they don't and many of the other Mac oriented DAWs historically have never offered demos.
They might feel the resources that would have to be focused on a demo version ,would hinder development as well as delay release times and also lead to more possibilities of cracks,I don't know but it is what it is.
One company will never please everyone,if they do this, why don't they do that?
I would actually love to see MOTU develop a demo lite DP8 and I told this to 2 people who could actually have some influence on this happening.
Believe me they see these threads, they hear the comments and they are listening.
When DP8 was announced they planned to have VST support only in Windows, when a bunch of us at Motunation expressed how VST support would be a great move for preset compatibility between MAC & Windows as well as the cool plugs only available as VST's,they changed their plan & added it.
Several users also while loving the 992 page brick of a hard copy manual also expressed how great it would be if we also had a PDF manual, they heard us and now we have both.

MOTU also now has embedded a cool new feature in DP8 ,if DP crashs a crash report will be sent to MOTU with the users email so tech support is instantly involved in users issues and possible bugs.

MOTU has made many significant changes with the release of DP8,they are listening,I do expect more great things coming very soon.
We shall see........

No, that sounds more like entering a satanic cult than purchasing a daw. :hihi:

And, how will they ever be able to check that you are not using Cubase or PT anymore? You only have to prove that you own a license for another Daw.

I guess upgrade from similarly priced daws:

Cubase, PT, Logic, Ableton, etc......yes

Reaper, XT, Podium, etc......no

But as ttoz says, there is always a way.

NO,the competitive upgrade only requires you provide some kind of proof that you're the registered user of 1 of the qualifying products.
Typically companies want a page from a manual or a serial # .
You should call MOTU sales if you want to proceed for clarification.

Well I'd dabble in the black arts if it mean't I would be granted knowledge to anything and everything, Lots of money and a few beautiful women...Maybe even a Faustian pact when I hit 40 as that will if such things are true give me until I am 60 years old = Plenty time for me  But alas I have two children, Full-time and I ain't hit 30 yet standalone. I hear you on the 'cult' thing. Might be game :hihi:

But keeping my iLok fo'sho. Still I would like to know exactly how its proved and where I'd stand with my less than DP8 digital audio workstation ;)

Cheers

I am have much interest for it but would definitely not consider buying it unless there is a demo.

BTW, the same goes for the latest MachFive which looks terrific, but again...

Yes yammpd917, Hopefully as mentioned earlier such an omission/ruled out at present option will reach the people it needs to reach and they take in the feedback as I could not/would not drop more than a say £20 - £30 on something without a demo version...A full-on DAW no. I do not anyone whom I could visit either that already use the long running MAC version, Even if I did though it still would not be enough as I'd need to be sure (after even the fact it may gel with me or may well be my ideal version of hell!) it plays well with my setup. Really do hope MOTU see this as easily one of the best way to pickup potential loyal customers/users

Best to all as always :)
