non-linear
=============================
You create "patterns" of music. These patterns can be
repeated using several modifications. It's also called
"pattern based music creation".
Typical DAW: Ableton.
linear
=============================
You create linear tracks - the same way you used to
record music on tape machines in the last century: You
record the song as a whole - and your editing refers to
a linear timeline. It is called "linear music creation".
Typical DAWs: Cubase, Reaper, ....
A DAW which can both, linear and pattern-based creation,
is: Apple Logic.
Good luck in choosing the right DAW!

Can't ableton live do both also? In arranger view?
Maschine is non-linear .. so is orion. Orion is MUCH better than Maschine at arranging the patterns though. Maschine's like being dressed in a straight jacket trying to eat soup with chopsticks .... Though it's the best for making patterns (imo).

When you have lots of little details, different fills, and breaks within the track that spread through multiple bars, not strictly for one bar only, like I usually like to do, doing that with a non-linear DAW is just impossible. When you're making a typical trance or dance track, though, no-linear DAWs can really speed up the process of making that track.
I actually wish I could have a choice of some kind [in Reaper] and use partly linear and non-linear features. That would be awesome,
because lots of tracks have the main parts of it repeatable through patterns, yes. Some kind of a combination would be great.
