I plan to release a few sample sets this weekend for Nanostudio's TRG-16 Trigger Pad Instrument--they'll be presets that are ready to use. In your opinion, is 99 cents a reasonable price for three 'kits' given the landscape of a typical cool app being the same cost?

Eventually, I'd like to provide some focused original content for a number of these sampler instruments out there, but since you can't just put content into the iPad store unless you have an app to sell with in-app purchasing set up, I'm relegated to word-of-mouth and other smallish avenues of promotion. I really need to price these things right so that they'll be attractive, but I don't want to just give away my hard work, either. I'd prefer volume over high cost!

Input is greatly appreciated. I really need to diversify my approach, but don't want to put all the time into parsing through my content only to sell 10 of them or something due to a pricing mistake. Help!

I think 99c for 3 is pretty reasonable :).

To maximise your returns tho you might want to pack them up as beatmaker 2 kits as well. I gather the 2 are very similar as I seem to remember a web site that let you take BM2 kits and load them into nano studio.

As an aside why did you discontinue some of your samples on your web site?

Thanks for the feedback! I am thinking that's the magic number for "awesome deal" bells to go off in people's heads. 99 cents is easy on the eyes. :)

And yeah, you make a great point about the various preset types that folks will want. I should be able to do that! Perhaps even a Garageband instrument at some point, too.

As for the discontinued products, I did that a while ago, and was thinking about how I might re-purpose all that work (picking the very best from them and retiring other things). I may retire everything after this weekend and begin to incorporate all the work I've not released with the older stuff that has been in the wild for some time now. Diverse collections of smaller sets, if I can group them in a way that merits the theory!

Having only 16 slots in a set puts a lot of pressure on the need for the one-shot to be something both special and 'usable' (if that makes any sense) both as an individual sample and as part of the group. I'm going to make the best decisions I can, thinking like someone who would also compose with the set: I was planning on doing this some time ago, but had been thinking more in terms of partnering with a VST maker to set me up with an odd little player with something unique about it; then I would roll up content bundles for it. But I think that idea was unrealistic given that the VST market is so splintered now. I see awesome stuff get released and it just seems to disappear because people are so used to being handed a free VA synth or effect. But samples, when done right, are somewhat magical, imo. Even something stupid like a twig breaking can be beautiful in the right context. :)

$500

No, no, ummmm $250

Uh, no no, wait - ummm $100

That won't work, uh, hmmmm, $50

Nah, I guess $.99 is fine.

(seriously, if it's really good, $2.99 tops)
