the PPG Wavegenerator is the straw that broke the camel's back for me- I currently have a touchscreen laptop - it's about 5 years old so my plan was to get maybe a new windows 8 tablet when it dies- but it seems to me the VST/AU and DAW world has been stagnant for the last few years but everything is just looking up for iPad going forward- I haven't really even been using my PC as a DAW any more- but like a dedicated instrument with the touch screen controlling my VSTs - but the new apps on the iPad are starting to catch up with the vst world and it's clear that it's just gonning to get better and better from here on out so I think I'm going to sell my laptop before it dies and get a New iPad-

it's going to be hard to say goodbye to Vaz Modular and Massive- but hopefully sooner or later they will end up on iPad as well

Yeah, I was on that track as well. Got all the IKM iKlips/iMic, Apogee Jam, tons of iOS apps. The straw that broke this camel's back- simple- useable pads/strings/vox for live use to add to my Korg SV-1. I thought I could do it with iPad- but the quality of what is out there was not up to snuff for live use. I know it will get their- and I am a big Apple Fanboy myself- but reality hit me hard- it's an amazing musical toy- great song starter- and there are some cool synths out there- but we are not there yet where it can totally replace the PC/Mac. I think we will be closer very soon but just not yet.

I fail to see why you cannot use the iPad for some things and a simple tone module for the rest. Still portable and PC-less, but all you need is the iPad (2 or 3), a tone module of your liking and a mixer to attach them to.

Fair enough. I have plugged it into my mixer, but I really have not scrutinized the sound quality like I have with vsti and hardware.

Yeah. No. This will not happen for many years. iOS/tablets are catching up, but they are currently at least 10 years behind dedicated pc's. The hardware isn't good enough.

Actually, I think it's is the OS that needs to catch up a little. It is very close and really is there in some cases. The hardware is not 10 years behind though. The A6 processor clock for clock is faster than a core2duo. When other a15 variants start flooding the market it will only be a year or two when this power becomes the norm. Plus you add in the fact that all these devices have SSD hardrives that were seemingly made for music production...

My prediction, the traditional pc will be a niche product in 10 years. More people will be using tablets than PCs in 2 years

Some of you guys are behind the curve. 5 years or less for tablets to be used on charting songs. I am going to go with less than 3 years before this is achieved.

And Netbooks were a pretty big thing some years ago. Where are they now? Same could happen to tablets, if the "next big thing" is coming.

I don't think that's accurate. My iPhone 5 is as fast as the laptop I had 4 years ago (going off of benchmarks). The iPad 3 isn't even as fast. The mobile architecture is moving extremely fast, and I think it will catch up within the next few years.I say that typing on a 3 year old MacBook Pro that easily runs a bunch of AUi's at a time.

I've been using applications like Reason on laptops even slower than that for ages, such as Pentium M single core machines, P4's, etc. The notion that mobile platforms aren't fast enough to make quality music is, IMO, erroneous.

No one said 'isn't fast enough'. But try using your iPhone 5 just like a 4 year old pc DAW. You can't.
