It does everything iU2 can do, is self powered, works on other computers, etc., etc. Roland hardware is always solid. The only thing I can see as a bad thing, is that it is expensive--otherwise, it looks like a solid hit.

Maybe I missed it but I didn't see iOS docking connectivity for iPhone. The appeal of the iU2 is iPhone dock connectivity or USB to computer.

i had the iu2 for 1 week, then i returned it. the build quality was ridiculous. i didn't believe the reports or i thought i wouldnt care, but it was really really bad plastic piece of shit.
but the main problem was that it didnt work with any app, not only garage band. it would go into clicks&pops mode after a few minutes use, until re-plugged. using ipad3. its just a faulty design, i dont wonder when its discontinued.

No offense, but I've been using the IU2 successfully for some months now. It's got its quirks, but the complaints about "build quality" are massively overblown.

To say it doesn't work in any app is just silly. I just bought Auria yesterday, and the IU2 worked well in both 30 pin (IOS switch) and USB w/ powered hub (Computer switch) modes.

Which iOS device and which version of iOS? I'm not paying attention to the build quality complaints. It's driver issues I'm concerned about.

I just got my latest issue of the Sweetwater catalog, and the iU2 is interestingly missing from their feature on iOS interfaces right at the front of the catalog.

My bad experience with the Tascam US800 has me nervous about similar driver complaints for the iU2. I think it's a great idea to have a dual compatibility device (it's worked for MOTU for years with USB/Firewire compatibility) where iOS is featured. I just worry that I would buy it, it wouldn't work, and Tascam does nothing to help - just like they have completely ignored the chorus of complaints about the US800 device (as they quietly drop it from their lineup).

BTW i would love if the iU2 worked reliably. More and more Iam using my iPhone to compose and sketch musical ideas. It would be great to have one device that I could use back and forth between iPhone and laptop to keep preamp sound consistent and so forth. But since nobody else seems to be trying this for now I think I will lay aside this idea. BLUE Mikey Digital looks like my current iPhone interface choice right now.

Ipad 3. Last build of IOS 5, whatever that may be. There's no driver involved with this, btw. The whole key to these sort of devices is that they must be "class compliant" to work!

As for newer interfaces, I'd be a little nervous about buying a 30 pin based interface at this time. Have you seen the new Iphone's dock connector? I assume that the next Ipad will sport the same thing.

I agree - but based on the responses on what appear to the majority of thread respondents here, the device doesn't appear to be fully 'class compliant'.

I do have some reservations about that but then again the iU2 was street priced at $150 or something like that.

*Bump*

- I got the iur2 to work quite consistently with an iPad Air - the trick is to use it's USB input instead of it's 30-pin, and *power* the interface's USB the whole time that it is hooked up to the iPad.

It draws quite a bit of power - that's it's (1) real issue, besides build quality.

You can get cables that will make it work through Amazon - that's what I did - and you can even use a USB battery to power it! It's a little kludgy - I'm trying to figure out how to put together a portable solution using it with the cabling and battery. I may even re-case it - we'll see.

I've probably read virtually all of the complaints made about the iur2 - the build quality is lite, but the interface works and sounds just fine with the majority of iOS apps - including using its midi.
