A Roland modular system was one of their choice weapons IIRC.

Saw them on Top Of The Pops 2 doing 'Love Action'. They had an ARP Odyssey.
Dunno whether they really used it though - I'd love to know what provided the tinkly cowbell things on that track though.

I once saw Phil Oakley sitting in front of a Roland System 100 in a video-interview.
I was also searching for Infos on the instruments they used in some forums, I am basically interested what they used in the new album "secrets" - this one has fantastic sounds, so many bleeps and Rezo filter seq. that it nearly hurts
Maybe someone knows what they used on "secrets" ????

There was a feature in a magazine called Computer Music recently (Issue 70, March 2004) entitled 'Stars On Your Drive:The Human League'. It gives you a step by step guide to constructing a Human League track. You might find this pretty useful. The website is www.computermusic.co.uk. I think you can order back issues here and if not, you can get the contact details and give them a call to get your hands on it.

On the album with the song called "Human" (the second?) they use a Yamaha DX7 and a Roland JX8P. In the early days they were using a Roland System 100.
Where the drums came from, I'm not sure but it sounds like a Linndrum indeed.
Good luck!

On Travelodge they mainly used Roland 100M modular system as far as I know. That system was then used by Heaven 17 after the split (and then bought by Meat Beat Manifesto).
On Dare they used (reading from the sleeve) Roland System 700 modular, Jupiter 4, Korg 770, Korg Delta, Yamaha CS15, Casio VLT1, Casio M10 and Linn LM1 for drums.
Roland MC8 used as sequencer. The Linn, System 700 and MC8 was the producer's equipment (Martin Rushent), also used on his other productions at the time, e.g Pete Shelly's Homosapien album.
To tomlad21: A Roland TR-808 can under no circumstances sound like a Linn drum manchine...
Linn is using highly processed samples, TR-808 uses analog circuit. Both excel in their own way.

Back in the day, you could buy third party sounds/ chips which had 808, 909,or Simmons sounds burnt on them for the Linn. Hence a Linn could sound like ay of them. I had the chips and Linn at one point.. (got them used for pennies and sold them for the same)ZooTooK wrote:On Travelodge they mainly used Roland 100M modular system as far as I know. I have a (not very old) copy of Future Music magazine, where Phil Oakley's interviewed about the old Human League gear as part of an '80s special.
