Before sinking the $30 into it (once I get the main app, I'm going to want the extra pianos
) I'd like to get some more information on the polyphony... is it 16 or 32 voices?

My previous answer is all I have as far as information and I asked the product manager directly. It really will vary based on device, and we test based on getting acceptable performance from iPad 1 and iPhone 4 and don't have a specific number for polyphony nor was I given an in-depth on the algorithm used. That said, I'll surely pass the detailed information posted above because it should really be helpful. Thanks!DrApostropheX wrote:Before sinking the $30 into it (once I get the main app, I'm going to want the extra pianos) I'd like to get some more information on the polyphony... is it 16 or 32 voices?

indeed, the piano are actually 4 (4 "sample packs", about 60mB each)iPlogger wrote: From the sound of things, I don't believe all 17 pianos are individually sampled pianos. For example, I can hear the same exact distinctions between the Grand Piano 1 and Rock Piano 1. Some samples have a slight twang or overtone at a certain velocity for both.

---I hope my post didn't give anyone the idea that I didn't like the free version piano, I really liked it. I don't know how to say this and not sound like more of an idiot than I usually do but it just seems to me that if the amount of memory that used to make these pianos was dedicated to just one piano it might sound killer. I realize that the controller will make a difference also.
I also wish that at least the free version that I downloaded could be used in Sampletank and that someone at I.K would come up with a good Supertramp type Wurli sound. I downloaded all of the e.p.'s a little while ago and while they were good they weren't right for doing Supertramp...
Rant over...LOL
p.s.- I own the Sampletank bundle for my computer and never found a great e.p. in it either so maybe I'm expecting too much...

I LOVE the EPs in Sonik Synth 2. You should try there.
It doesn't sound like you're unhappy with iGrand Piano at all. Sounds like we impressed you with its release and knowing that we are constantly updating our apps with new features and sounds. If you have any suggestions for future versions the IK Forums are a great place that our whole team checks.

The app looks very promising. However I don't agree that stereo samples is a good thing. One problem this creates is the superimposition of stereo samples which will inevitably result in phase issues. The other is that it becomes impossible to collapse the image to mono without more phase issues. I would have preferred HQ mono samples with modifiable soft-panning and possibly convolution for piano body resonance. This would both make the sample set smaller and allow more imaging flexibility.Peter - IK Multimedia wrote:All instruments use stereo samples and multiple velocities.
Then again, this is for iOS, so maybe not so relevant for its target market...

---I own Sonik Synth also and there are so many things to love on the whole bundle but my computer for some strange reason doesn't like any of it and so I have to put my hopes in the ios format.
I really like the new piano but just wish I could use it in my ios Sampletank, I'd love to layer that piano with the Sampletank strings....You guys did very well with this!!

Scott, sorry. I did misinterpret your ending statement to mean you didn't care for the app. Hey! Another Supertramp fan? Yeah, I find my best Wurlis have been on my hardware synths. Maybe the next app IK releases will be e-pianos.
Keep an eye on Neo-Soul Keys. They have brought one of their e-pianos to GarageBand for iOS. Maybe they will bring their Neo-Soul Wurli at some point. http://neosoulkeys.com/ipad/
I've had some more time with iGrand Piano tonight and continue to be impressed.
A few issues. The app crashes every OTHER time I load it. It's been consistent on doing it every other time. Even if I delete the app from memory. I forgot to mention this before.
The other issue I noticed tonight is if you have quantize turned on PRIOR to recording, then the notes are cut off on playback. Like all my notes became 1/8th notes even with the sustain pedal on. I did a few tests and it was pretty clear. Turn off quantize before recording.

Regarding your comment about layering. You should be able to do this using background audio. Unfortunately background audio is nearly useless on my iPad 1, so I can't try it out myself. But one of my favorites in SampleTank is to layer the Rock Piano with the Lush XPander pad.

---Thanks for your reply. Rock piano and Lush Expander Pad are one of my favorite combi's, they sound great together! Thanks for the word about those other sounds, I'll give them a try and hope that IK listens to us Supertramp fans...LOL

Bought this last night for my iPad 2, and am fairly happy with it. It's a shame that most of the grand pianos are in the expansion pack. I'm also a little disappointed that background audio is hit or miss with a lot of apps. I got it to work with a few, but was surprised to find it doesn't work with Sampletank. From what I can tell, you can't run Sampletank at the same time as iGrand Piano. You minimize one, open the other, and sound completely cuts out. You would think that, using the same sound engine, there would be a way to make them play nicely together.
On the plus side, it is very responsive, sounds better than any other piano app that I've played with (have tried quite a few), and I never had a point where limited polyphony tripped me up. I just hope that, for that price, we see some updates that address a few of these issues.

The crashing is odd. Can you please contact our support so we can get some more info on it?iPlogger wrote:Scott, sorry. I have an Ipad3 32gb with almost nothing installed, but I do have sampletank and igrand demo. On both, polyphony is exactly 16 notes with the sustain pedal pressed. Combining sounds in sampletank can lead to a 4 note poly combination.Peter - IK Multimedia wrote:There isn't a set polyphony that I can quote from a spec sheet, as it varies by device. Getting 32 from SampleTank on your iPad 1 is actually very good. We do test in a way that is based on getting good performance out of iPad 1 and iPhone 4, so it is good to hear that it is working well as we'd want and expect.iPlogger wrote:I don't think I'll get a chance to try this at work. Got some fun stuff I'm working on and a meeting in an hour.
What is the polyphony? SampleTank on my iPad 1 seems to have 32 note polyphony which hasn't always been enough. I've had notes cut out when using the sustain pedal.
Igrand should have more polyphony or some sort of note priority before cutting the lower notes.
I don't know how an iPad 1,2, iPhone 4 and 4s can have more polyphony than the new ipad...
