Hi Jimmix.

I was in the same position six months ago and didn't really know where to go to learn the basics.
The best advice I can give is to search for some you-tube tutorials on the basics of using Live. You probably won't find anything of massive value when it comes to production secrets etc (youtube is free after-all) but as a starting point just to get you to grips with the basics and to get your head around the software there are some good enough vids on there.

Hope that helps :)

Thank you :)

Mmmmmmmmmmmm. As someone who just went through these, it's kinda rough actually. First off, it's live 7 mostly, which is fine for most stuff, but there are these "add ons" for the 8 stuff, and then it get dicey. Then the second one has some nice stuff, but a bunch of repeat stuff from the first one. Then, and not 100% sure w/o checking, but I think even "tips" has some repetitive stuff.

Kinda confusing. But since it's cheap right now I guess it's a consideration.

I've found that I can find whatever I need on youtube right now. Type in a subject (like groove clips) and walla! It's right there.

Buy Ableton, you can't go wrong.

There are a few .. things that still need work but other than that it is really a great program.

It's all I need, sure it might not have notation.. proper plugin delay compensation.. and automation lines don't snap to envelope when not using the pen tool.. but still it's amazing.

Don't let the simple interface fool you, it is very powerful.

It also ships with a great set of effects!

The standard edition is perfect for people who want to get on board. If you upgrade to suite you will get a bunch more, but it would be better to get the standard and then buy the components you want from the suite individually.

Live 9 with curved automation will amazing, it also is going to ship with a circuit modelled bus compressor & EQ to help warm up the sound. Seriously if you want to mainly work with samples then you'll be fine and won't ever have to worry about the PDC issues.

Best way around that is to freeze and sample all your instruments in your tracks and work with them as audio and use Abletons effects, at least if its of any concern.

I really don't think the PDC is even that audible, i've ran into it a few times but there is always work arounds..

You could also check out Bitwig studio when it hits the surface too. Im quite interested in that one, and if it offers more than Live 9 offers I will probably switch.

WHAT YOU DONT GET WITH LIVE STANDARD

- Notation
- Tons of Midi control similar to what Cubase or Logic offer
- Modular routing system (Unless you use Maxforlive)
- A bunch of Instruments apart from a HQ Sampler & Drum Sampler
- Device Chaining (EG: Something like Xlutop Chainer)
- Built in pitch correction

WHAT YOU DO GET IN LIVE STANDARD

- Completely intuitive workflow using loops & a sequencer
- The ability to play your music in a "LIVE" fashion like a DJ or on the fly like an instrument.
- Tons of great effects that you can chain together in whatever signal flow you want!
- Neatly laid out library for storing custom FX chains, Instruments etc.
- Non-destructive workflow so you can make tons of edits, and go back if need be.
- Good variety of time stretching algorithms!
- Easy to use automation system
- Access to a bunch of Live Hardware Devices such as the APC40, APC20, Launchpad etc
- Ability to create custom hardware layouts
- Ability to host AU, VST, VSTi effects of plugins
- Freeze your tracks to save on CPU
- Ability to Warp your audio, set markers on tracks for DJ use if needed.
- Built in audio slice to midi ability so you can hack up samples and play back as drums.
- Drum Sampler is pretty impressive and you can do complex FX routing and automation on it.
- Access to Maxforlive *Paid upgrade* which lets you design your own devices!
- Work with audio projects up to 24 bit, 192khz !
- MPC Style swing templates for adding realtime *Groove* to pre-existing midi clips.
- Multi-track recording!
- Ability to upgrade to a bunch of Physical modelling synthesizers from Applied Acoustic Systems
- Ability to upgrade to OPERATOR which is a easy to use FM synth
- It's fun to use once you learn it.

I would suggest picking one topic at a time to learn; otherwise it might seem overwhelming. When I first started with Ableton I learned the various ways to setup my drums/percussion. As you progress in that move on to the next bit and so on.

This is just my take on it. It helped me learn the little things you can do in Ableton and the different ways to accomplish what I want. I'm no expert but it helped me. I still learn new stuff and find new ways of doing things.
