I've been playing with the demo and I found the filter to be very, very good!

I think the layer system is great, and it comes to its own when making very 'organic' pads. This is all to do with each oscillator having it's own filter and envelopes so that each can be subtly different, adding variation. This is akin to the way Oberheim Four Voice or Vermona Perforumer behave, for example and is a gateway to very lush analog-style pads. However CPU consumption can put a stop to how big a sound I could get.

I could play a two oscillator pad with 8 notes poly, high quality setting with no issues at all (using Quad Q9300 2.3Ghz PC). When I added the third oscillator (at 8 note poly) realtime playback was not possible due to the crackling noise, so I reduced the quality to normal and all was well, however there was a subtle change in sound. I was able to get a lovely sound using four oscillators, high quality setting and 4-note poly though. That's more like it. This is where LuSH works well on my system: a big, 'organic' sound and not much CPU use. 8)

With the following settings the bass can be very tight and snappy indeed (provided the cutoff/env amount/env ADSR is set correctly):

Amp source ENV1
(OPTIONS) Env retriggier set to normal
Bothe ENV set to 'trigger'

I think the layered mono bass sounds are also LuSH-101's strong point. And again, it's all to do with having independent filters and envelopes. One layer can have a very tight bass thud, but the other layer can have a bright buzzy tone, and the third layer can add some sub bass. *thumbs up*

When compared to other VA synths in my synth folder, the tone is different (pretty much as all other VA synths are different) so it's a good thing as LuSH offers yet another take on the analog sound.

To me, LuSH is all about the layers - it's totally integral to the whole structure of the synth and they've largely got it right. Too many multitimbral synths omit things like seperate outs for each layer, individual arps for each layer, proper layer and split options and seperate preset loading for each layer and the whole synth. I would like to see interaction between layers in the mod matrix but other than this I think the layering really works.
Sure, you can use MUX or whatever to layer TALs, DIVAs etc but I personally find that this feels like a workaround - with LuSH it's all already there and is just a pleasure to work with. In many ways this is the multitimbral VA synth workstation I've been waiting for - it's so easy to work with and sounds beautiful.

I could really use a page where I can edit ALL the layers in a relative way at once.

This could be a great option even in 'absolute' mode as well. It would speed up the workflow when starting a patch, so I could lock all layers to the 'absolute' mode and any tweak in layer 1 would be reflected in all the other layers. This way I could quickly bring all needed layers to the same setting, and then unlock them to add subtle variations to each layer. It would work a treat when making those pads. :)

For those who wanted some sort of 'acoustical reference point':

An extremely nice demo of the real 101 because it captures the analog 'rawness' of the real deal very well. The good filter stuff starts around 2:50, so keep at it.

PS: High volume strongly recommended. 8)

Actually i am a bit suprised that after so long time of development noone tried to do it. Honestly i was looking around pages to find something like it.

I am testing demo. It is ok but like other peeps said it won't kill Diva or anything like that. It definitely IS superb synth. With distinctive character and sound. Top notch FX and layers. It's definitely worth it for someone seeking that sound.

I assume that we are only yet about to see what is it capable of when future sound banks start to emerge on market.

ps.s is there any way to disable some of the layers i don't need in particular patch? I dont mean "mute" i mean complete "off" function to save CPU. Maybe there is some tiny switch or some "initi sound" which use small cpu or something.

Cool. Just found this, looks like it was added in June this year:
http://www.synthmania.com/sh-101.htm

Looks like those sounds are based on patch sheets included in the manual.
The manual is available here, the patch sheets start at page 42:

The one thing I don't like (at all) is the stepping in the filter on very high resonance settings, it gives the magic away :?

My D16 support tickets aren't working... I own Nepheton and Phoscyon but I have no discount in my account, anybody know how I would get a discount for LuSH-101?? Cheers.

I solved the GUI size by muxing it .. so now i have a more proper setup of pure sh-101 controls with big knobs. An extra advantage of doing it like this is that the GUI won't affect your head so much. Easier to compare sound quality.

The more i use it, the more fantastic i think it sounds. The sync is one of the best i've ever played with. I just need to change it a little and i get a completely new sound (not sweeping it).

Does it sound asking-price good though..? How many have bought it? Though i guess those who have aren't in this thread anyways ... probably got better things to do ;)

I'd like for some people to understand that you can criticize a product and still like it. When i complain about the GUI it doesn't mean i don't like D16 or that i think it sounds bad.. There's no need to go into defensive mode and assume that i bought some NI synth and that i was ok with that or that i own Sylenth1. It's so weird, yet expected, to read nonsense like that here.

Hopefully D16 reads this or someone notifies them about this thread so they get a chance to change the GUI and rethink pricing policy. How about splitting it up into a pure SH101 for half the price and then sell all that isn't SH101 for yet another half of the price. There's both SH101 and non-SH101 versions of filter and envelopes so why not..

I'm with Crackbaby on this one.

I like what it can do but I have GUI/my eyesight issues with it. I also have CPU spiking issues with it as well.

Does that mean I'm hating on it?

No.

I own Drumazon, Nepheton and Phoscyon and got 10% discount.

I own everything and I got a 20% discount.

Was hoping for 30% :x :P

Maybe the time has come that we can't play the instruments in real time anymore, but first have to freeze the tracks in order to hear the results. The recommended high end specs on the D16 website are to be taken seriously. Now you know why it has taken so long before the plug-in was launched. The computers were not ready for it at the time.

The GUI looks very nice, though.
actually, motu digital performer pre renders, which will make this synth far more usable for those that use DP.

The way it works is, after you play your part, it automatically makes an invisible freeze file in the backround, and releases the cpu, all behind the scenes, and if you need to edit, it automatically "comes alive" again, etc.

it works very well, and i am surprised no other daw ever implemented it to this day.

But it would be ideal for the hungry stuff like this.
Wow, I never knew this! Genius!
+1!
