Hey, I really wanna get into dj/producing/dubstep... I currently have FL Studio, but the demo version. My birthday is coming up, and I thought id ask for the full version, or another software.

What software should i ask for? Get the full FL studio, or a "better" software???

Also, what plugins are good to get? I really like the heavy bass Skrillex uses. Also Excision. What plugins should i get?

Get NI Massive and/or NI Reaktor with Prism, Spark, etc. They do Dubstep very well. All of the above can be used inside of FL Studio.

Harmor, Harmless, Sytrus, Poizone and a few other Imageline synths (FL Studio) would also benefit you.

I would get Ableton Live 64bit very easy workflow the lite version comes with many novation hardware midi controllers.

These two instuments Diva & Zebra have many commercial sound banks for vintage and modern electronic generes.

Trilian has thousands of bass sounds which are sampled from the most famous and well liked hardware synthesizers as well as acoustic instruments. Trilian also has a lot of great effects built in.

Skrillex uses Ableton Live for his DAW and uses plugins from Native Instruments & Fabfilter quite a bit.

So far the main ones that I know he uses a lot are

Native Instruments Massive & FM8

Celemony Melodyne for those weird sounding vocal melodies he is known for.

RAZOR for dupstep is best

Ableton Live + Whatever vst (Massive, Sylenth1, etc.). For a low cost option for producing from electronic to analog : Cockos Reaper

I guess any major DAW would do - see which makes your workflow easier. I tried many (FL, Live, Sonar, Reaper, Studio One) and ended up using Cubase for composing songs/remixes cos I get where I want faster.

For dubstep NI Massive is a great choice if you need killer wobbles and lush pads. I also like Sylenth and the Korg Legacy pack for more "traditional" synth sounds.

Also try to avoid opinions that emphasize on "Best" because that really changes fast around here. It should really be up to what you want!

Everybody will just continue to list their own favourite gear now. You can get a lot of different software but in the end it's what works for you. Some people feel at home with Ableton, some like Cubase, some use hardware synths, some work completely "in the box".

Yesterday I came across this tutorial by Rusko. Lots of good to-the-point advice and the guy works in Sony Acid on PC with a crappy monitor! But he gets the job done.

"Oooh I dont know. Sounds a bit scary"
"It's not scary. You just lose a sense of who you are and all that sh!t"

Here's some Ableton footage:

I recommend Ableton because the Ableton community is very large and very active. This is a very important point when trying to decide on a DAW.
