May IKM had inside knowledge that Apple was going to move to Lightning port and didn't make any dock devices (very smart). Thankfully Apogee made their cables removeable so they could release a Lightning cable.
Now, Alesis and Mackie and everyone else that is doing devices that an iPad docks into- ouch!

I'm kind of glad I haven't yet invested in ios device hardware addons just yet. I'm planning to get an iPad soon, but I don't think I'll be upgrading my iPhone 4 (only so much money). I had read so many complaints about Alesis' io dock that I had already planned to NOT buy one.

Apple is notorious for this kind of action.

I only hope there are enough "legacy" docks (accessaries) around, to be available for my recent hand-me-down 1st gen iPAD.

... or, 'adapters' will have to suffice.

I'm sure you'll be able to buy 30-pin female to Lightning male adapter/extender cables for $7 or so on Amazon soon (in addition to adapter plugs). Those extender/adapter cables will be more useful in my opinion.

At this point, it should not be much of an issue for most accessories. Apple sells Lightning->30-Pin adapters for $29 and $39. These are supposed to work well for most accessories. So IKM and many others should be fine. You just need to pay extra money to get the connector.

The companies that will be having the hard time are Alesis and others who made hardware that houses the iPad inside. Though I assume you might be able to purchase the cable version of the adapter and have it dangling out of the casing.

The question is, at what point manufacturers are going to stop making 30-pin devices. For those with current hardware, it will become more and more difficult to find 30-pin accessories.

There is a change that there will never be 3rd party lightning cables/adapters.
Apple put a chip with a unique id into each lighting cable, it's basically like a dongle.
I think the future is usb/camera connection kit. Yeah, it sucks.

Sheesh. It's not enough that they control all the software, all the hardware, the way the software is delivered, etc. they have to control all of the accessories now too?

Not really. It's been known since its introduction that the Lightning cable has an authentication chip. It has already been cracked and duplicated. There will be as many aftermarket connectors available for the new Apple products as there are for the old ones.

Not true. Manufacturers will be able to purchase the authentication chips from Apple to make their accessories. Bose and others are already working on accessories. There will be no need to use "cracked" chips.

Alesis could just make yet another slide in adaptor but this time one that sits above the tray and has the 30pin/ adaptor built in.....

We had no clue, we've always been about the Mobile Music Revolution and have focused on making accessories that fit not only iOS devices, but most of our stuff also works on most Android devices as well.

I see no benefits to the lightning connector over a mini-usb
Other than Apple can control who makes cables. You'll always have to carry a special apple cable around. You can't re-use a cable that every other tablet and phone use.

It's not on their macs, so it's an IOS only connector.

Hope some European standards committee whips Apple silly with a lighting cable.

IMHO these cables and connectors are very well designed and more than reasonably durable. These mobile devices (unlike the Mac) have special connection requirements due to their skinny form factor. (Less than 10mm thick)

Sheesh, how hard can it be to design a connector that's paper thin, can be inserted into a device without actually looking at its polarity, and can transmit power, digital audio, video and other data simultaneously and be plugged and unplugged several times every day? Phhht.

yeah i got my iphone 5 and to be honest the new connector is really the nicest i've ever seen. it feels a bit like a mini headphone jack. super easy to connect without looking.
mini/usb looks like something from the 80s compared. i never got it why usb has this horrible ergonomics, especially the normal sized plugs.

Well the 30-pin lasted about ten years!

Wow- sucks to be a manufacturer of Apple 30-pin dock music devices
