Ah, you're running Logic. Then you're out of luck, I'm afraid.

Logic doesn't support the VST format at all, only the OS X native AU (Audio Unit) format. And the fundamental problem with AUs in this particular scenario is that they can't send out MIDI - for some unscrutable reason MIDI OUT has been left out of the AU spec! That's why there is no AU version of Kirnu.

Ableton Live for Mac supports both the AU and VST formats, though.

Another solution might be Plogue Bidule, a plug-in 'environment' that accepts VST and AU both. The stand-alone version is a free download (so far) but unfortunately, you have to buy the full version in order to get the AU plug-in that can host a VST. Just google Plogue Bidule - and be prepared to be a bit confused at first…

The long and the short of it is that Kirnu won't work in Logic, unless you 'wrap' it in Bidule. And that's why I use Live 8 for that kind of situations.

Just a caveat: I haven't actually run Kirnu through Bidule in Logic. It should work, but you never know.

Perhaps someone else can come up with some clever scheme? Is there a cheap/freeware Mac VST host that can use ReWire, for example?

If it were easy, anybody could do it!

Shoot, I was really looking forward to this. Why does Logic continue to use AU if it doesn't support midi out. That is seriously dumb. They need to at least incorporate full VST support in Logic 10.

I think I have an old copy of Ableton 6 lying around. Maybe I could use that.

I got Kirnu to work in Logic by turning off "Open in 32-bit mode" and enabling the IAC driver in Audio-MIDI Setup. The Kirnu AU plugin is distributed as 64 bit only, so it won't show up in Logic if Logic starts in 32-bit mode.

It's tricky to use Kirnu in Logic by default, because the default environment sums all MIDI input to the sequencer. What you likely want to do is feed notes into Kirnu (but not the Logic sequencer) and let Kirnu arpeggiate the notes, sending only that into the sequencer.

For a quick demo, I armed the Kirnu track for recording, played a few chords into a MIDI region, then set Kirnu's output to MIDI channel 2. Then I created another software instrument track and loaded up a synth. I set it to listen only to MIDI channel 2, and it began playing the arpeggiated notes that Kirnu was generated from the chords I had played on the Kirnu track.

I'll set up an environment that puts Kirnu in series with my MIDI stream later, but I thought I'd share a few tips to help fellow Logic users make use of this outstanding plugin.

Thanks for the tip roderickm!!! If you have any other interesting tips using Kirnu, I (we) would certainly appreciate it!! :wheee:

hi!
I just installed Kirnu but for some reasons it doesn't work.
I'm running Live 8.2.6 on Mac Lion 10.7.3
I installed the 64bit and 32bit VST versions, and then the 64bit and 32bit AU versions and Ableton doesn't even list Kirnu in the VST folder (and Kirnu is there)
I tried rescanning the VST folder holding ALT key but no way... :( and I opened the Live Log to look for some error but nothing...

thanks for this great plug.
would it be possible though to release a skinnable version of this plugin or have an alternative GUI or at least being able to change the colour of the background and knobs?.
the silver trance futuristic gui i personally find a bit of a turn off to work with.

try this:http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Audio/VSTAU-Manager.shtml; was really hard to find (the main link is down), but i just tried this with a different vst in logic, and got it to work...

It works right now. You just need to add Kirnu as an instrument, then select it as the input for a synth, and arm both tracks to record. It works just fine for me.
