Metro is a facade lying on top of Win7 with a gawdy GUI change.
No big deal.

There is much more in Win 8 than stupid metro tiles and touch support.

I'm not a fan of the metro interface but I have to say the other technologies they've added/refined are quite good. I've been using the release preview on a laptop now for about a month and it's grown on me. It feels very responsive and fast, even on a my 5 year old core2duo Dell.

I'll wait to see support statements from all the vendors/products I use today and plan on switching once the early-adopter kinks get worked out. I purchased the download $39 version today because I know I'll eventually switch. $39 is pretty darn cheap for a latest OS release.
That is interesting.. and thank you for going through the hassle of linking all of those..

personally though.. none of that is used.. outside of maybe the graphics acceleration.. which really isn't a biggy to me.

no multiple monitors.. I leave my PC on 24/7 so I have 0 boot time.. I don't have an issue with losing user files.. and chkdsk/ntfs support should very rarely be used/scene.

Yes, I can see those all as valid changes.. but not ones that I'd spend money to get.

In any case.. we all have until the end of JANUARY to decide. Apparently Microsoft also removed the DVD and other? media codecs from the base install.. if you want them, they have to be purchased separately in a bonus pack. HOWEVER, the codecs and media center are included with the upgrade purchase until the end of Jan as well..

It's how they rolled out NTFS and I agree with the approach. Corruption at the filesystem level can be particularly insidious. Give it time to mature. Heck, Linux has been working on ext4 since 2006 and they just discovered a corruption bug in the stable branches of 3.4,3.5,3.6.

I'd be a lot more concerned if MS decided to add their new filesystem ReFS 1.0 to Win 8 as the default choice.

I need someone to tell me why the heck I would want to upgrade in the first place. I am using Reason 6.5 64 bit with win 7 and as the saying goes "if it ain't broken, don't fix it".

So can anyone tell me why I would upgrade please?

on a sidenote.

nobody mentioned "midi and windows 8"
of course i think it is no coincidence that microsoft left out midi but will include midi support on win 8 pro next year in february.

a good example how people are mildly leaded without recognizing it.:hihi:

I guess its because we are discussing win 8 on computers, not tablets.
And yes. It works just fine on computers. :)

If your current system works for you and none of the new features insterest you, there isn't one. What has that got to do with anything?
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer

this indeed changes the position.
win 8 was completely out of my focus because if i could not use a controller or a midi keyboard it is utterly worthless for the majority of producers.
nice you confirm it is working.

This one bugs me. The metro part is indeed tied to an appstore and the crappy xbox interface. Why in the world would I want an xbox interface on my desktop computer?

However, unlike Apple it is not a proprietary gateway to app access and distribution. You can use the appstore if you want. But, you don't have to. And, you can develop to the API and still distribute the app yourself directly to customers. It is not the forced vertical integration of the Apple model where MS gets a % of everything you do. The few times MS tried that, they got pilloried publicly for being evil money grubbing bastards. For some reason it is ok for Apple to do it.
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer
