Other than Apple can control who makes cables. You'll always have to carry a special apple cable around. You can't re-use a cable that every other tablet and phone use.

It's not on their macs, so it's an IOS only connector.

Hope some European standards committee whips Apple silly with a lighting cable.
When did mini-USB gain the ability to pass digital video at HD quality? That's new.

The lightning dock does essentially everything that the old dock did. but in a much smaller, and more robust form factor, and with significantly fewer wires. USB is in no way a drop in replacement.

I only hope there are enough "legacy" docks (accessaries) around, to be available for my recent hand-me-down 1st gen iPAD.

... or, 'adapters' will have to suffice.
Well the 30-pin lasted about ten years!
Cool... I've not payed much attention to it (other than seeing LOTS of interesting goodies), as I didn't have any "iSTUFF", and didn't anticipate being able ($$$) to get into it at all.

But, my sister has to have the latest/greatest iEVERYTHING, so I scored by happening to be there when she was giving her old model away.

I figured if nothing-else, I could have my photo's on it to show those who have an interest in my shoots, so I got the "camera connection kit", and it would also be a 'nice' PDF reader for all my software "manuals", to use while flying/commuting.

I hope to use it as a camera 'monitor' attached to my tripod, so I think I'm good for what I want/need, so far.

AND ~ USB in/out, for MIDI connectivity, since I saw the 'Moog' and Wolfgang Palm stuff
I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil
