Oh yeah, and new bass strings rule the heavens like god decended down from his recliner and said "thou have changith thy strings, art though now god like in bass tone????

Yep, father I have sinned.........I'd been at least 9 months since I change my bass strings.......... blasphemy!

That's a shame about Earvana. I've played several ESP's that had them and they were all great. The concept makes perfect sense, I can see why some people might not like them but I think it's going way too far to call them a gimmick.

I've got a 5-string, tune in 5ths Schecter Celloblaster that makes all my bog standard licks sound like Paul Gilbert string skipping:

Elixirs rule on bass.

So, I spose you're not really a dub/reggae kind of guy. :hihi:

The more I think about getting back into playing a real bass the more I want a kala u-bass. I almost bought a Guild asbory when they first came out. the Ubass is so much better in so many ways.

The last few days I've been playing nothing but bass (ala my ztar) I've gotten into this cheesy synth pop funk. and trying to work out whatever I can get my hands into. Most of the time I can work it out with a fretless synth sound or fretless virtual sound. No matter how close I come I know it's not the same as the real thing. All the demos I've seen of u basses so far I'm digging the sound and the scale length.

Hmm.. I like my cheap-ass Ibanez six-string bass, although I can already see that I'll be wanting to move to something better once I get my chops down.

I like the neck despite the fact it's six fet wide (lol), the tone is very acceptable fr a $300 bass (!!) and for learning it's a great instrument. :hihi:

Maybe an eight-string bass next - yes, I'm into odd instruments. I tried using an octaver on the six-string and it sounded hideous so that's not an option. :? Not all the echo and the reverb in the world helped.

I'm thinking.. it's probably time to grow some balls and just learn to do the simple soldering needed for pickup swapping. I know what I want and there's nothing like it out there, so.. argh.. time to nut up or shut up! :-o :-o :-o

Besides, if I totally screw up, I can buy an entire prewired Strat pickguard and just settle for that.

I know where my toolkit is, but I'm not sure if I threw the soldering iron away in disgust or not... :help: :help:

Seymour Dumcan has some kick ass soldering videos, I've been watching those with my morning coffee (hardcore way to wake up in the morning, I know).

As to guitars on Ebay etc. - I have this weird fetish that I want to play the instrument before I buy it if it's not electronic. I tried mail order a couple of times and enedup spending a lot of time and $$$$ getting the damnable things set up once they arrived.. so now it's a "thing" with me, I want it in my hands before I throw down my hard-earned dollars. :-o

Prearly Gates for the bridge bucker.. maybe rails for mid and neck.. hmmph. Or leave the mid and neck single coil and just go overwound? Decisions, decisons! :help:

Holy shit look at all those strings!!! :-o :-o :o :o

Well, I have to desolder the old ones to make room for new, so I suspect there's no escape from the hot irons.. :help: :help:

Nope, you just cut them out and screw in your new solderless system. I've soldered together thousands of traces worth of pickups, pedals, and synth stuff, yet it's not something I've ever enjoyed.

me too (my dad bought me most of the radioshack p-box kits when I was a kid), as I get older it sux more...and less. More because I have soldered so much I'm sick of it, less because a few simple tricks I have picked up along the way. The biggest is vision, my magnifying goggles make all the difference in the world and guitarpcb.com has some nice boards for foot switches/switches that make things a lot easier (like this )

The worst thing about soldering is I once melted the corner of a 1959 Les Paul Special's pickguard. This particular pickguard is aftermarket and kind of weird (it's got a Tele-style 3-way switch and a neck single coil), and 100% irreplaceable.

that's what I said about the truss rod cover for my daion. It's brass with power mark xx engraved in black on it and a unique shape...they didn't make a whole lot of these guitars and stopped making them 30 years ago so it seemed I would never have one...but as you know I got one ;)

Meh.. I'm going to hold off on a new guitar until I get my chops back and decide if I'm going to play enough metal to justify the cost. :? :?

I need some weird FX first, so it's going to be spending some time with Electro-Harmoix gear.. :-o :-o
