hi mates,

i'd like to make aggrotech / dark electro music but i'm having problems with choosing the right vst plug-ins. i'm still new in creating electronic music, i've been using fl studio for some months but i managed to learn it (i used reason before fl studio for drum tracks). i know the basic music theories because i'd been playing guitar for 6 years so song writing is not problem for me (i have few songs already). i understand the structure of this music style but i need some help with choosing vst. i've tried genesis cm and toxic biohazard for synth and only the built in vst and effects for drums but i'm not satisfied with them.

i need suggestions for:
- synth (lead, bass and sfx)
- drums (and distortion for it)
- vocal post processing effects

i want to get dark and harsh sounds like hocico, suicide commando, unter null etc.

by the way, which one is better for electronic music, ableton or fl studio?

Well if your looking for electronic drum sounds, id use ableton live and its built in drum sampler. It's pretty great but if you need some classic drum synthesis sounds id check out D16 Drumazon & Nepheton.

Drumazon & Nepheton both have individual audio outs on each of the instrument channels, which you can then apply post processing to.

If your lazy you can always just use multiband distortion like Ohmforce Ohmicide on all the channels which can work surprisingly well.

To recreate the sounds your looking at, id do my homework and look up the equipment that those artists used. Then try to find software equivalents by asking on KVR.

Have fun

i have tried out aether reverb+ohmicide distortion on the drums and they work well together :o i got i had wanted. i use sylenth1 and nexus for synths :)

by the way do you know any communities which deals with industrial/dark electro/hellectro/harsh ebm/aggrotech?

Hey man, here are my recommendations:

Synth: ElectraX, Blue, Zebra2...these are a bit pricey so you could go with NI Razor, Spark, those are great too and a bit cheaper.

Drums: Battery 3, more Battery 3, and forever more Battery 3 :D Also check out FXPansion Tremor, Rob Papen's Punch, Melda Production MDrummer.

Distortion: FabFilter Saturn (this thing is unbelievable), OhmForce Melohman (even more unbelievable), Rob Papen's Distort. D16 is amazing for that as the previous poster has mentioned. But anything really, some tape emulations are fantastic. Try Tone Boosters Roundtone, Waves Kramer Master Tape, Tone2 Filterbank.

Vocal effects: depends on what you want to do with them, usually a nice e.q. and some compression, that's a HUGE topic :) There are so many great comps and e.q.s out there, don't know where to begin.. my favorite E.Q. is FabFilter Pro-Q, and their Pro-C (compressor) is amazing too, so...

I would also recommend Melda Production's Creative bundle, it's fairly inexpensive and just AMAZING, all you need to do some real in-depth tweaking.

Hope this helps, happy sonic journeys :DDD
