So how do you know whether you can get on this mythical list? I'd like to upgrade but can't really afford 250 euros atmirvg wrote:Thanks for the advice. I just called and got on the list. I think it is for those that had the upgrade in their shopping cart at error price but hadn't purchased. It looks like Ableton are honouring that price, or going some way towards it, I think.kx.001 wrote:So how do you know whether you can get on this mythical list? Yeah, the tip about External Instrument actually cuts down considerably on "waste tracks," so I edited that out. However, Live is still pretty messy. I think it's the GUI--since everything is basically just flat black lines, it gets really tough to quickly distinguish things, whereas Cubase's (or most other DAWs, for that matter) color separation and tasteful 3D GUI elements make it a lot easier to visually keep track of what's going on.lotus2035 wrote:@sockofgold: I read your post before you edited![]()
You were saying something about Ableton getting cluttered real fast, yes I was thinking that too now that I've been using the Live 8 demo a few days, I suppose you get used to it though.
I bought a 2nd hand copy of Live 5 in the marketplace, I might jump on the upgrade to 8 (and 9) before the 25% off offer ends. Have to think about it some more.
Live is definitely not without its downsides, but then again, no DAW is. Live does have a lot of great things that no others have, though.
Also, just worth noting: the difference between version 5 and version 8 is pretty vast. If you haven't demoed version 8, I would definitely do so while you still have that offer available.

But you can change the width of each track and colour code them which really helps differentiate them.sockofgold wrote:

I personally much prefer it to the looks of Logic or Sonar for example

True, and I am real stickler for having a color-coding system in any DAW I am using. It helps in Live, but it's still not perfect--I just find the mixer to be a big jumbled mess either way.VariKusBrainZ wrote: But you can change the width of each track and colour code them which really helps differentiate them.

To be clear though, I am really not trying to deride Live in any way. Every DAW has its (major) flaws, and I just personally find this to be one of Live's. It is still my favorite DAW to use for composition, and as I mentioned earlier in the thread, I already bought my Live 9 Suite upgrade, and I really pumped about it.

Not fixing the PDC would be a HUGE mistake. more and more people are becoming aware of it. if they are not fixing it.. I would guess not enough people have complained.. YET

Unfortunately, the only people who seem to really know about this issue right now are the ones who have either A. experienced it themselves, or B. read about it on a site like this.memyselfandus wrote:Not fixing the PDC would be a HUGE mistake. more and more people are becoming aware of it. if they are not fixing it.. Public awareness isn't high enough, it must be raised to the point where this issue is known well beyond forums like KVR and Gearslutz. Maybe Ableton will start giving a shit when a good portion of their userbase is threatening to switch.

I have noticed this a couple of times in the past without reading forums and thought it was because of something I had done myself. I don't see it as a such HUGE problem though so I will stick to Live.colinssx wrote:Unfortunately, the only people who really know about this issue right now are the ones who have either A. experienced it themselves, or B. read about it on a site like this.memyselfandus wrote:Not fixing the PDC would be a HUGE mistake. more and more people are becoming aware of it. if they are not fixing it.. So far after all these years, it's been futile to change Ableton's technical directions or focus on user-centric issues, with the exception of Live 8.0 that had so many problems even they admitted to it.KungKrille wrote:I have noticed this a couple of times in the past without reading forums and thought it was because of something I had done myself. I don't understand that. I've seen a plethora of people getting plenty pissed.colinssx wrote:Unfortunately, the only people who really know about this issue right now are the ones who have either A. experienced it themselves, or B. read about it on a site like this.memyselfandus wrote:Not fixing the PDC would be a HUGE mistake. more and more people are becoming aware of it. if they are not fixing it.. But, it's really strange from my POV that the PDC problem is there on the picture with a plug from cable guys, and they use live in the viddy where they promote the product. My point is, I would think that devs were aware of the problem even more than the user and would be like "hey, our plugs are not working properly because of this PDC thing"

BTW, did I read somewhere that tempo based FX have issues? I think I've run into this where ubermod is on a bus and the tempo sync isn't "tight". But it's fine within the effect chain. Doesn't make sense because if that was the case, everything would such and busscomps seem to be fine.

As I understand it, effects that rely on tempo don't always get "out of sync" because of the PDC issue. The problem is when an effect that relies on the tempo clock is placed after an effect that introduces latency, the clock does not get offset to compensate for that delay. This problem also manifests itself with automation because the automation is not getting offset either.
The timing is still technically in sync, it's just that events that depend on tempo information are falling behind the beat.
If people who are using tempo synced effects are not using effects/devices that introduce a significant amount of latency they may never experience the issue (or at least may not notice it). Others (like me) encounter issues like this and simply find a way to work around it, and never report the issue publicly.
I think that it's very important that this issue get fixed in Live 9 (though I don't know how they have prioritized this issue) but for me it's not a deal breaker if it doesn't get fixed. I can understand however, if others decide to look elsewhere if it doesn't get fixed.
