Largo vs Blofeld

The Blofeld got the PPG filter model, sample import an user wavetable import. That alone makes me like it more in comparison to Largo not speaking about sound quality...
As i mentioned several times one of the tricks to get a great sound out of the Blofeld is using the Drive curves. I prefer the Tube Drive mode.
I have used this and the PPG filter model for most of the presets in my commercial Blofeld bank (see my signature).
I agree that transferring presets between Largo and the Blofeld does not always work 1:1 and needs some calibration.
Anyway i got both and i love Largo too. In the Windows version there don't seem to be annoying bugs as far as i could see.
There are a few ways to imprive the sound of Largo like e.g. enabling the "Bass Boost" and/or using the filter Drive. Besides that Largo got a built-in EQ.
In the Blofeld e.g. the 4 layers and the Sub-Osc's of Largo are missing.
The Layers could be emulated with a Multi-program in the Blofeld. Also for adding Sub-Osc's you could create a Multi-program based on two presets.

Don't you think that's the DA convertors of the Blofeld making everything more pronounced up front and a little more lively? I would sure think so.GruvSyco wrote:Yeah, Largo is 32 bit. I have both. Purchased Largo first but got tired of what a drag it puts on my 2011 Macbook Pro so I purchased the Blofeld. Largo to me always seems like it needs boosted or something, I usually run it with a compressor and limiter.
I'm very interested in using the arp and complex modulations of the Blofeld. Is it hard to edit the ARP and mods in the Blofeld?
Can someone explain how the Arp works in these synths? I heard that instead of having the Arp go in normal up/down/random patterns you can compose a sequence for it to play and also have each note/step of the sequence modulate a different parameter. Is that true?

Looking at the Soft Knobs Blofeld VST editor, it seems that sequences can be made yes:stikygum wrote:Can someone explain how the Arp works in these synths? Yep, Waldorf has made a very nice arp in Blofeld/Largo.

My preconception was that Largo was like the VST equivalent of Blofeld, but they are somewhat different?poonna wrote:It seems to me from recent threads that people prefer Blofeld sound over Largo sound, or maybe just prefer Blofeld over Largo in general. Featurewise, they are very similar, and Largo got Brilliance feature from Blofeld in the latest update. I wonder now what makes Blofeld more preferable. Is it just the PPG filter or the quality setting? Largo even has SubOsc. Doesn't that make Largo better at doing bass?
I just tried out the keyboard version of Blofeld in a music store, and I see that the rack version can be had for less than €250 secondhand, so it's an interesting and affordable synth.

There may be 2 new editors in the future.
Softknobs is working on a new editor. The older editor 0.8.3 was abandoned to make a new editor.
"Working hard on new editor. As you may know I started the new editor from scratch and I start to realize how much work was put into it.Much of the work was put in a reusable set of features to easily create several editors."

To necro butcher this thread (and simply because i can't sleep here...
), i wonder why noone ever linked to this excellent comparison between Largo and the Blofeld: http://www.modulatethis.com/2011/07/wal ... ofeld.html Especially the schematic shows the differences very well.

Very cool, chk071! Thanks! I managed to make a paper-copy of the schematic for reference -chk071 wrote:To necro butcher this thread (and simply because i can't sleep here...), i wonder why noone ever linked to this excellent comparison between Largo and the Blofeld: http://www.modulatethis.com/2011/07/wal ... ofeld.html Especially the schematic shows the differences very well.

You're welcome.
I actually stumbled across that comparison some time ago when i wondered the same thing as the OP. Let's just say it strengthened my motivation to get Largo.

Since you necro'd this topic, I'll just jump off topic and say how much I'm loving the iOS Patch Morpher Blofeld app. That thing is so much fun and really breathes new life into the Blofeld.

I agree 98% with the articlechk071 wrote:To necro butcher this thread (and simply because i can't sleep here...), i wonder why noone ever linked to this excellent comparison between Largo and the Blofeld: http://www.modulatethis.com/2011/07/wal ... ofeld.html Especially the schematic shows the differences very well.
One thing is missing in the comparison and that is, the presets in Blofeld is much much better than in Largo. Also, the browser in Largo is a mess, actually it is easier to navigate in Blofeld because it has filters (Bass, Pads, ...etc), so it is easier for me to locate the sound I want in Blofeld not in Largo.
Yes, I really like the keyboard version. I have zero problems with it. Great controller with high built quality and inviting design to play with (the white one is really cool). It is also from the cheapest hardware synths around!
However, I wouldn't buy the desktop version, unless you want to use it in a gig. Largo + laptop is a better investment especially if you are going to do your presets. Anyway, controlling Largo with a Blofeld is fantastic although not 100% for all parameters, but most of them
Nowadays I prefer easier wavetable synths like Serum and Dune 2. But, if I want that Waldorf sound, I'm free to use Blofeld or Largo
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

I Sold my Blofeld Back in 2012 after i got Largo.
But a year ago i had to tape and repair my syncrosoft key because it just felt apart when i took it out off the usb port.
Not sure how much longer my key will work so i ordered a Blofeld that will arrive today.
It is actually the best low cost multi timbral hw you can get these days
Everything else released these days have limited polyphony or other limitations or are simply to high priced to be worth it in terms of features vs cost.

I prefer Blofeld over Largo any day. One word. Better sound.poonna wrote:It seems to me from recent threads that people prefer Blofeld sound over Largo sound, or maybe just prefer Blofeld over Largo in general. Or maybe it's just my imagination that people prefer Blofeld.

I sold my blofeld when i bought Largo. I got Largo via the nice sale Native held and was able to sell the Blofeld for a nice price. I don't miss it at all. Like, not even a little bit.
