THIS. Imperfections bring soul back to music, at least in my opinion. Everything is too damn perfect nowadays. Noise, wow&flutter and all that shizz ftw!
circuit modeling and 0-dfb filters are cool

I remember the days before digital very well. Give me acoustic and digital over "analog" any day.

That being said, here's my opinion on TB Reel. Let's say you're using Reel and you're some young person has never had experience with tape, or some somewhat older person such as myself coming from the acoustic world and very familiar with both analog and digital world but doesn't really have a horse in the race as far as "vintage" or "warm" or whatever. That is, take the plugin as a digital effect- which is what is literally is.

I've been checking out the demo- tape shmape, it could be a very useful effect for, say, crumbling sharp transients rather than limiting them, and it can have a subtle but significant effect in a chain of stuff intended to bolster stereo imagery. I think it is an excellent plugin. I think people who want their sounds to sound like they were recorded to analog tape should record to analog tape, it's not f**king rocket science, we did it as drugged teenagers, jezus.

Early CDs (esp early 80s) were pretty crap. In theory, they were 16 bit audio with 96 dB dynamic range but the digital master was usually made by playing the analog master tape (or some nth generation dub of it) into the early 1610 digital mastering machine from Sony. This machine mangled the audio fairly badly (non-linearities galore) and the results were then played back with early consumer CD players which mangled them further - crappy DACs and clock circuitry (jitter) and analog signal chains full of inferior op amps and other components.

From an audiophile point of view, a quality LP pressing played through a good signal chain sounded better. An AB comparison obviously favoured the vinyl. Many significant recordings were re-mastered in the late 80s and 90s with much better results and were marketed - by CBS for example - as "re-mastered" in acknowledgement of the above.

I don't really buy into the digital/analog debate nowadays.. All I know is there's a couple of settings on this plugin that make my mix sound better in most cases... So I use it!

That's a matter of opinion.....an opinion I strongly disagree with......Muddy is the word that comes to mind........"Warmth" = Mud in my book.....

In my opinion the Soul of Music comes from it's content not the noise tacked on to the recording...but if that's what you like then more power to you....whatever floats your boat. But having lived through those days I'm ...never...going back.....

Which is why I have no desire to do it again........recording to tape that is....... :hihi:

For the record I've made no comment on the plugin itself only the concept behind it...if you like it use it...All the JB plugins I own are high quality. I'm sure this one is no different.....if it's possible to be high quality and low fidelity at the same time. :P

i tested reelbus now the whole day and i must say, this is a keeper.
it is smoothening the transients in my mixes in a very nice way.

my favorite preset is the "swiss-legends" (should be a studer, i guess).

i use a pultec style eq after reelbus, to compensate the small high frequency loss.

this will find it's place in my mastering chain. :D

Seems like you don't understand (or don't want to) what folks are telling you here. Just imagine if violin played without any modulation. Or our voices sounded the same - at the same pitch. Just imagine if the wind in the forest was always a white constant noise.

We like to make our creations more organic and colored. Tools like this can be artfully used to create something new. In the end, it's the content and not the process. It's the end result that matters.

I'm starting to using it again after a long time.
I noticed that the auto level make up makes it a bit louder that the original.
Wich makes it more difficult for A/B testing.
Is this discussed before here?
