Please can someone give me some help with a simple little multi-track recording set-up using my digital piano, a microphone and an ipad. My DP is in a different room to my studio and it would be great to be able to record song ideas using my ipad and a mic for vocals. But, I don't want to spend too much since I already have a perfectly functional studio!!

So I think what I need is a cheap(ish) little small-footprint interface that I can sit on my piano and connect my ipad to. My DP also has a midi-usb host and standard midi connectors so I could use it as a midi controller.

I've found the Tascam IU2 (which seems to have been discontinued) and the Roland Duo-Capture EX (which I don't think is out yet). These interfaces have both midi and audio connections. The Tascam is considerably cheaper.

I was also looking at an Apogee One which has a built in mic but I would need the CC kit and a usb hub (also only mono - my DP has a stereo output)and it doesn't have midi.

Sound quality is not paramount here since I just want to be able to sketch ideas.

Are there any other (cheaper) options that I may have missed?

Thanks for any help :D

$150 or $160? Dock connecting, so if you've got the "old" 30-pin, it won't require the CCK or any Lightning adapter.

If you are not needing to record the midi info from the piano, and its for sketch purposes, can't you just use the built-in mic?

For song sketches I use a voice recorder (like a dictaphone usually used for lectures and meetings etc), I've used the built in mic on my laptop, even recorded them on my old phone as voice messages.

Personally I don't see any need for better quality than built-in audio for such things, YMMV of course.

Audiobox USB might be an option for you.

Thanks for the replies. hmm yes I guess I should try the inbuilt mic first.. I just assumed that it would be pants but it may be good enough for my purposes. I,ve bought an app called studiotrack and will try it out with the inbuilt mic
I'll check out the other suggestions too, thanks!

I bought the Alesis IO4 recently. Needs to be powered from PSU when using with the iPad but it works great. You can record 4 tracks simultansously (mono, 16-bit) or two stereo tracks (16 or 24-bit).
