Surface 2013: good bye iPad?

I got a 6 year old Lenovo laptop running Reaper, and an iPad with more apps than I care to type, yet I can carry both to a gig... Easily. Only problem is my laptop locks up once in a while.
Specs can look good on paper, but the hardware and the software have to play well together.
I got my comfy chair and some popcorn. Let the games begin.

I'm sure it will be an ultra smooth experience.liquidsound wrote:I just spoke to a Microsoft Surface Sales Manager and said that the next version of the Surface, due around the beginning of 2013, will run full Windows 8 with i5 processor and capable of installing ANY application we can install on a regular laptop. Mouse, usb, external drive etc.![]()
That means Reaper, Reason, Live etc. as long the minimum resolution is there...
Anyone else has better infos?
Oh, and, around the beginning of 2013 probably translates to Fall 2013.

Okay, but now I have to have a keyboard and mouse. I'll just stick with my laptop then. It's all quite subjective, but having owned a Win8 tablet convertible, I don't care for the desktop apps on a tablet thing. It just doesn't work well. It will someday, but not yet.liquidsound wrote:If you can't use the fingers you can still use the mouse and so best of both worlds AND if you wait for Reaper or S1 or whatever you dream of to come to an iPad near you....
Portability and Power and additional Mouse and I will not have to wait for a useful application to be written for the most expensive platform on the planet.
Flash movies....
And the best of all = Hell with iTunes!![]()

I agree, the iPad is still the king for folks that want a fun and convenient appliance. But iPad isn't a personal computer - you can't personalize the hardware or run a different OS on it. These appliances are in fact, killing the PC, and that's not a good thing for freedom or innovation imo.
I'm glad MS is moving ahead, finally. Windows 8 and the Surface will change things, a lot. For one, they will kill MS's "partners." There will be less competition, and fewer desktops, fewer custom builds, and more expensive custom components for the few who still like to build their own hardware and choose their own software, maybe even run an open source OS.
The Surface and Windows 8 are 5-way multitouch - far better for serious art folks than an iPad. The Surface even has a keyboard and will let people get real work done on a lightweight multitouch device. It's in fact a game-changer.
Apple will have to catch up in this regard, which it will. And MS will have to catch up in the apps department.
And those of us who like to build our own PCs will be paying more and more for the luxury, and innovating less as the era of the all-powerful PC comes to a close
How are you all liking those limiting appliances?

So the iPad is killing the "PC", but Microsoft is also killing it?

Maybe, but imo Apple died one year ago.
The rest is just an echo going to get softer and softer...
My iPad will be obsolete probably with next (or about) iOS upgrade.
I wonder who's killing who.

I can't think of anything worse than Reason on a tablet device! It's bad enough on a decent sized monitor. I'll hardly be ble to see it on a tablet screen let alone use it!liquidsound wrote:That means Reaper, Reason, Live etc. as long the minimum resolution is there...:
Not sure why everyone is getting so excited about Surface. Most MS stuff is usually a bit of a let down to put it mildly. I reserve judgement until its been around a while and is proven. Until then I don't think it will be killing anything!

It's fine, absolutely no difference to Windows 7 on my machine.Aural Chaos wrote:How's that low latency audio, and MIDI, working out for ya', Windows 8 fans?
I'm not a fan of most of the new "modern" interface stuff, but once you're on the desktop, it's windows 7 with bells on (minus aero)

Well, SALES managers says lots of thingsliquidsound wrote:I just spoke to a Microsoft Surface Sales Manager and said that the next version of the Surface, due around the beginning of 2013, will run full Windows 8 with i5 processor and capable of installing ANY application we can install on a regular laptop. I'm in my grumpy mood today and will not getting any hopes up - I still feel that Microsoft have lost all direction and run out of fresh ideas. But if the next version of Surface will be as cool as they say. it might just be something.
Personally I think that making music on iPad/iPhone suck badly - so any improvement is just welcome.

They'll have to leverage the enterprise business to really get the momentum...because consumers are currently transfixed on Android and iOS

That won't be at all difficult with tablets like the Thinkpad 2 and the ElitePad 900, which are designed for the enterprise, run full Windows 8, and are quite durable.itsDavidAbraham wrote:They'll have to leverage the enterprise business to really get the momentum...because consumers are currently transfixed on Android and iOS
The Thinkpad 2 would even make an ideal "only" PC, due to its docking station.
