The dino head on the top cracks me up.

And a straggler, since I went off into bus comps:

I'll skip the official bus compressors.

So, this is 7 pages of complaining about a GUI? When did everyone stop liking pretty colors?

Post

Not to beat a dead horse, but just in case IK is listening, let me just put in one more vote for "this GUI makes me want to puke."

I realize it's kind of silly to judge a plugin based on its GUI, but we do have to look at these things for extended periods of time, so it is important to have a decent GUI, if for no other reason than to minimize eye-fatigue.

I just don't understand why IK didn't go for the hardware look on this one--the 1176, LA2A, and Fairchild plugins all modeled the original hardware units' looks for the GUIs, and they look great. Why not with the SSL, like all the other SSL plugins in existence?

This... thing is truly an abomination. Truly one of the worst GUIs I have seen in a long time, and quite surprising from IK, who usually has excellent taste in GUI design.

I am really, really excited about having an IK-built SSL strip in the Custom Shop and I'm itching to use my stockpiled Gear Points, but I seriously can't put down money for this until it has a GUI that doesn't look like a clown splooged all over it. Please, guys... Please fix this...

And one of those vurt frog head things.

There could be possible legal ramifications, or at least embarrassment from the unsanctioned copying of something that's still made by the company that started it. I guess they have official amplitube gear and not. Most of the unofficial SSL stuff is really boring: colored knob tops on a light background, etc.

The backwards-reading Sifam-style meter is kind of synonymous with the bus comp, though. Anyway, I'll take boring over ugly any day. Of course, my vote is to change it, a lot. Maybe it needs the boring treatment as above (NI, etc.), and a Christmas switch to revert back to the current version.

Yeah, boring is better than blinding.

Although, all complaints about the GUI aside (including my own), I must say I do like the sound of this thing very much. It's really easy to get nice results on quite a variety of sources. Hopefully, they'll remedy the GUI issue so I can feel okay about buying this thing... :)

So, with this in mind, let's make yet anther SSL clone, how VERY original! Then, it will be time again for yet another amp clone, and then for a reverb clone. How VERY original!

Not mentioning the iCr*p, cause that's really too much.

Sorry, but I don't get it! :help:

On the otherhand, all of the Quad processors look identical. They could have varied them a little by having different knob types on each.. or maybe at least had different color on the 'LCD' panel or the faceplate (such as on the individual CSR plugins)

That said, as they are, I find them completely useable. But I have already become confused looking at the multiband compressor briefly thinking it was the Stereo Spreader :hihi:

What's there to get? IK specializes in hardware emulations. They are pretty darn good at it and have a wide variety of products. Some companies only come out with a product or two a year... Why would you bitch about all the cool things IK is releasing INCLUDING hardware and iOS stuff.

I guess I don't get it.

Yeah.

Yeah, I don't get it either. Well not all of it, anyway. This is obviously supposed to be a 4K channel. The thing is how accurately it's emulated, how analog sounding it is, if you will. Even SSL doesn't really go there with the analog modeling, since Duende is from the C200 digital console, which is modeled architecturally on the SSL 9000 (like my modules a few pages back). Duende is more like the IK Black and White, before they added distortion(s). Which interestingly enough, some people are already complaining about, but I digress.

Analog emulation aside, the architecture of the SSL channel (EQ, filters and dynamics: gate/expander, compressor and side chains) and the bus compressor makes for classic and powerful audio tools, all the way from the grittier SSL 4000 versions, through the superanalogue 9K, Matrix, Duality, X-Rack, etc. Alongside that is the digital evolution from Axiom, CX00 to Duende. Now with Waves, UAD, NI, IK, Cytomic, PSP, fxpansion and whoever, analog modeling is added to the equation. It's sort of an Ouroboros.
