Mismatched Monitors & Sub

Can anybody give me any insight into matching a pair of Yamaha HS80M monitors and an M-Audio Studiophile SP-8S subwoofer? A friend told me this might not work, but I don't understand why that might be.

I also fail to see why this would not match. This subwoofer has controls for a LPF frequency for the woofer itself plus HPF for your nearfield monitors (in the manual referred to as satellites) which gives enough controls imho to make it match.
