This loads DX7 patches too

I am getting tempted to go back to reason with all these neat RE devices coming out from propellerhead and other companies.

TY 4 the heads up.
I'm tempted to get some sounds from Reason again too.

So- It's only sines modulating sines?
I wonder what I want in here
-my site is gone and music a mess

AFAIR it is... like all DX7, after all.

Gotta try getting Malstrom to do some FM sounds.
AFAIK, we should just be able to plug another waveform
into frequency input.
Cheers man for clarifying, I'm half-inspired to
dust off Reason.
With sine-wave FM-
the sounds coming out will be far from sines 4 sure.
I'm not sure if FM is possible with the original rack,
gotta try.

So when does NI weigh in with a RE?
My fave dev among, Synapse, have a couple I need to demo.

The PX7 GUI looks a lot like FM7, gotta wonder if not NI techs have given Props a helping hand making this plug?

Or maybe the both copied the look of the dx7

Looks nice - my biggest beef with FM8 is that FM7 looked so much cooler (a.ka like a DX7)!

That said, my biggest beef with Reason is still the fact that they refuse to make it full screen.

To my eyes the DX7 is mostly covered in black casing. Buth both FM7 and PX7 rather use the dark green color around the buttons, as the main background color in their GUI.

So in that sense I feel the PX7 borrows more from FM7 than DX7.

But that is just the GUI of course, has nothing to do with the sound.

Native Instruments FM7 was so much superior to FM8 in many other ways as well.. like having the ability to copy a lot of stuff from one operator to another. FM8 was a massive step down IMHO.

This PX7 looks pretty neat. Any more sound demos for it? Would love to hear how well DX7 patches translate.

Cheers!

Thor is very much capable of FM sounds. There's the FM module as an oscillator and *any* oscillator module can modulate the FM frequency of another oscillator module via the modmatrix at the bottom.

The 2 things PX7 really has going for it is a simpler workflow than mucking with the modmatrix and oscillators in Thor and the ability to load DX7 presets.

It's a nice addition, one I wish they included in a Reason update and not as a separate RE.

(I still wish Reason would get proper PDC)

I downloaded the demo, it is only sine waves, as suspected.

Expected a lot more from it unfortunately. Not letting you create your own algorithms and only having sine wave modulation gives the old FM8 a big edge.

This is not gonna set the world ablaze or have users of other DAWs wishing they had access to REs but it is a welcome addition to Reason. It's a very nice dx7 emulation, no more, no less. It really adds something that Reason has been missing - Thor's FM capabilities are no substitute. Maybe it's basic enough that it could have been included as part of an update rather than as a separate RE but, all in all, I think they've done a decent job here.

The GUI just looks similar to a brown Yamaha DX7. With lots of Teal in place of green.

It has to be evaluated in the context of Reason being a modular environment. So you can use external LFO's and Envelopes to modulate. You can also use external filters etc. I'd image building massive 12 or more operator combinators wouldn't be a program either.
