iPad to iMac wifi connection issues

Since I've update to OS10.8.2 and iOS6 on my iPad, I have had odd problems trying to create an adhoc wifi network to use midi apps on the iPad to control programs on the iMac. I've read and followed the usual advice about setting up a new network, going to AudioMidi setup, etc., but sometimes the iPad doesn't even show up, other times it does but I get an error when trying to connect (cannot connect to....).

Anyone have success with this particular configuration care to share some advice?
