FM7 is closer to a DX than FM8. Worst update ever.

"Best" has no sense for me.

The one I use the most often, and programmed a lot of sounds for :

NI FM8

Some other ones I like, and also made souunds for :

RP Blue, and Sytrus. Toxic is limited but Ok too with a sound of its own, like Phantom.

Some others did not work at all for me, but its useless to mention them here.

If I had Reason, I'll try the PM7 new synth, though the video demo doesnt really show if it can make classic DX sounds, or less.

FM7 patches sound identical in FM8 btw.

PX7 is a straight up emulation of DX7 and it converts original Sysex patches. No fancy features or extra waveforms and automation is limited. It looks nice and sounds very nice though. Never tried an original DX7, but it should sound the same considering there's no circuitry modelling involved.

The question in the original post was not which is the best DX7 emulation so that comment is not really relevant.

FM8 got a lot of features that go beyond the original DX7 while could import the original DX sysex files.

And all the presets from both work in FM8 anyway... Lot of extra features that I find very usable also. I would not switch back to FM7 given the choice.

Well I'm equipped with the following atm : Fm7/FM8, DX7II FD, TX802, TG77 and a pair of ears.

I don't mind beeing in the minority, though I dont even believe that "a majority" think like you say, and tbh those who back up their claims by invoquing this kind of reasons for sole argument just let me cold. Not believing in urban legends is indeed very relaxing.

Anyway, een if this was true, at a certain point, the majority thought that the earth was flat. Later it appeared they missed something important in the equation.

in the hardware world, isn't the Yamaha FS1R the king of FM ?
Any FS1R ninjas care to comment on this ? They usually sell for a pretty penny on ebay..

FM8 is kinda the standard in straight FM... I like a hybrid like Sytrus better

But for me the 'best' FM synth is Bazille. Don't even think about loading a DX7 preset! It is not the classic Yamaha FM structure at all... While the usual FM synth so easily dissolves into a fizzy noisy sound, Bazille has a snap and snarl and raw presence that puts a smile on my face. It is a truly unique synth and be prepared for some learning curve!

Suspect as much as you want, I could not care the least. I suspect myself your "minority" argument to be more than questionable, if not false, and that you dont have anything substancial to back up your claims. End of.

Btw I liked a lot the FM7 GUi and feel, with the colors reminding the DX, and was VERY disapointed when I first opened the FM8.

Several hundreds of presets and hours of work later, I find the FM8 GUI and UI very functional, easy to work with, and very powerfull. Still like FM7 GUI, like nostalgia, but definitely prefer to work on the FM8.

Yeah, just like Stevie Wonder, who only likes to work with fizzy noisy sounds .....

If its good for Stevie, its good for me.
