The other nice things about XBMC are that it runs on any platform and I can use my iPad or iPhone as a remote for it - I can even browse any media folders on my laptop harddrive through the remote interface and select files to play.

I recently got turned on to Spotify, which is essentially all the music in the world, on all my devices. For stuff not in the Spotify library, like the CD of my kid singing in the school choir, the Spotify player is really easy to load up. Just drag and drop on my PC and seconds later, it's there on my phone and everywhere else.

iTunes is near impossible to load new music onto if you don't have your original iTunes authorized computer. I know this is a function of copy protection, and that there is a way to do it, but it's just so convoluted, which is the complete opposite of Apple's consumer friendly philosophy.

Spotify solves all those problems rather elegantly.

foobar2000 for audio and VLC media player for pretty much everything else. As i have an ipod i have to use itunes now and again but if it were not for the ipod then i wouldn't. Less said about windows media player the better IMveryhumbleHO

Foobar since it can use Asio! It's the only Player I found that I can get to use my Firebox for Fake-Surround with my 4 monitors and my subwoofer. And it allows for Folder-based listening - I don't like playlists

For non-Surround I have 1by1 installed - lightest folder based player on earth

I replaced VLC with PotPlayer recently since every other player (even all the commercial ones) seems unable to play back BluRays with smooth audio and video on my slightly older system.
A bit overwhelming at first, millions of settings, but once configured it's brilliant.
Nice skins too.

For Sample pre-listening - even single cycle waves - try the new Resonic Alpha. Brilliant.

Zombie Queen, Yes that is certaintly one of foobar's strong points I think

The VST component is by George Yohng and surely everybody is aware of or has used some of his audio software so the foovstdsp 'component' is as solid as it can be (only spits its dummy out when faced with far too many plug-ins to scan/list). It would be very, very useful to have it updated (If that is possible) as despite remaining bloat free foobar has gotten alot more features/functions added since the VST component was last updated. The main thing I'd love to be able to do is select or setup which folder it should scan or even I'd be more than conent to create a seperate small custom folder containing only the VST plugin processors that I use with it for example. There are so many 'components' for it that there really isn't much (If anything) AFAIK that can't be played back in the way of audio formats.
It can be installed as a portable application which is handy if say you have a little 32GB flash drive with a portable audio basics setup you take with you. I have a little setup with REAPER, non-installation required freeware
VST/VSTi plugins, sample library along with many other bits and pieces. It fits in just great for that portable purpose. Bit of Foobar2000 fanboi tbh

Since around version 10. Always been good and stable. Not the lightest media player but does a lot. I only use it for the basics though.

anyone into blu-ray audio? can you play it in Foobar? does foobar recognise the m2ts format?
