hello KVRers!

Christmas is coming, and I have a gift for you!

we all know the fact: Android sucks at music apps (with some notable exceptions like Caustic and a few others).

BUT, it's perfectly fine for what dumbphones do best... playing silly games :-)

and I know how much you people here enjoy the occasional "guess the synth" game. so I decided to give you the ultimate synth guessing thrill for Android!

ladies and gentlemen... it's Synth Quiz time!

a small screenshot to pique your interest:

the game is modeled after the various logo/movies/cars/whatever quiz that are so abundant in the Play Store. if you ever played one of those, you should be familiar. if you didn't, the super-short explanation is: try to guess the maker and the model of the synth you see in the picture (pro-tip: you can click on the picture to pinch-zoom it!).

there are three levels, with all kind of synths from vintage to modern. and more will come! my plan is to have every synth ever made covered. but I will probably settle for something less.

the game tries to be historically accurate without being overly pedantic. wherever synth names are composed of number and letters, you can put a space, an hyphen or nothing in between (example: "dx7", "dx 7", "dx-7" are all ok). also maker names can normally be written both in short and full form (example: "Moog" is ok, so is "Moog Music", or "Moog Music Inc" or "Moog Inc." etc.).

if the regular guessing is not enough for you, there is even a trivia minigame where you get 10 random questions about production dates, polyphony, analog vs. digital.

synth data (names, production dates, etc.) come mostly from Vintage Synth Explorer. where not available, I integrated with data from Wikipedia or my own googling.

I used images downloaded from the net, trying to avoid watermarked images or sources that clearly stated copyrighted materials. nonetheless, it is possible that I used some images without the necessary permission. if anyone has an issue with some image, I will remove it and search for another one. if *I* will get too many issues because of this, I will simply remove the application altogether.

levels and difficulty balance reflect my own judgement. if you think I did something blatantly wrong, or spot any error, feel free to point it out and I will do my best to fix.

source code is available at https://github.com/dada/SynthQuiz. for obvious reasons, the actual content (synth database and images) is not included. that would spoil all the fun, wouldn't it? :-)

enough ranting, you can download the application in APK format from my dedicated webpage:

http://dada.perl.it/synthquiz/

any feedback is welcome, have fun and... let's see who's the first to complete all the 3 levels! :-)

cheers,
Aldo

bump...? come on, people, I can't believe nobody gives a f-word about it :-(

this thing is FUN! I wish somebody else made it, so I could play it myself!

and I put a lot of hard work into it. and it's free. and it has synth pictures. so, what's the problem?
  • - don't like the idea?
    - the screenshots suck?
    - no time to play guess the synth games?
    - don't want (or know how) to install apps outside the Play store?
    - fish?

please, be kind. give it a try and let me know how you like it.

cheers,
Aldo

Hey Aldo, nice app, sorry about the late comment.

I've tried it, even though I suck at naming vintage synths. Maybe this will improve my knowledge, I'll make it a goal over the xmas break.

I put up a blog entry on my website, so hopefully that will throw some traffic your way.

Any reason you didn't publish on the Play Store?

cool, so I can proudly say Synth Quiz is fun and useful :-)

actually, also based on feedback from close friends, I think I will add the choice to play in easy mode (4 multiple choices, you just have to pick the correct one) or hardcore mode (as it is now, you have to type in the names, no hints).

because I don't have an account there, and I have no plans of selling anything or raising any money anyhow. so, paying Google to publish free stuff just for fun seems a little bit... counterproductive to me :-)

but I realize that's just how things work nowadays. so I will probably reach for my wallet and give my hard-earned money to Google, sooner or later.

cheers,
Aldo
