Steinberg don't sell the program directly from their site ( only upgrades) and refer to their distributors .

In my country the distributor that I have referred to sell cubase for 900$   almost twice than in US .

If I order via Ebay I can get Cubase 7 for 640 $ and its after import taxes + I get CMC CH Controller for free

Is it ok to buy from Ebay ? Will I get any support from my local distributor in the future ?

Thanks

since they are offering the CMC - i would then guess you aren't buying a pirated copy - that would mean a packaged serial and dongle - that is all you need to register/activate for full support on steinberg.net.

I have had good experiences on ebay. Just be sure to check out the sellers ratings and reviews. I would not buy something like this unless the seller had at least a little positive feedback. And IMO if you are patient you should be able to get a better price than that (for 'used' software).

Generally it's safe as long as you do your homework. Established users with large amounts of positive feedback tend to be ok.

Is there a reason he can't buy from a US distributor? Is this prohibited?

Dunno which country he's in, so there might be some local laws that make it difficult, but usually there should be no problem buying s/w from overseas. Next time I upgrade Cubase, I'll probably just buy the new one outright from somewhere like JRR Shop (little difference between buying a brand new full version and upgrading from such an old version - believe it or not, I'm still on SX2 :-o ). Especially with our exchange rate at the mo.

To the OP - usually with s/w you can buy from anywhere in the world - all you need to do is check whether you are required to pay import taxes. Which differs in every country. And in many countries you only pay import duties on products over a certain value (usually several hundreds). Often the import duties are low enough to still make it worthwhile. For example in Australasia we pay ridiculous prices for most music gear (h/w and s/w) so for any large s/w purchase I generally buy from overseas. No problems. One caveat is to buy from a reputable dealer. Personally I'd be very wary of buying s/w such as Cubase via eBay, but it's your choice. As long as it has the dongle etc, it's legit. And for the price you mentioned - I think I'd rather buy new.

I just bought a copy of Cubase 7 from ebay USA, and I live in Australia.

When I went to activate it, I got an error saying that I have entered a "US Only" version and that I will not get any support or updates if I choose to proceed with the activation!

I'm pretty angry about it, and have written to the place I bought it from (not their fault, but it wasn't listed on the ebay listing)..

Steinberg have done this on purpose to control the market and distribution - I should be able to get it anywhere!

does anybody else have any experience or information about this?
