Those of that got in on the Sweetwater order: I just called them because mine hadn't shipped yet (ordered on the 5th). The friendly customer service rep. Kevin told me that they got a ton of orders, and all of them should be shipping out today. They were waiting for the stock to come in from Avid. Apparently they got completely blown away by the number of orders and demand at that price point.

Short version: Look for a shipping email by about 6:00pm today confirming your M-Audio Venom is shipping.

They received 1900 units and are processing the orders.

They are trying to ship them all today. Since they don't process your payment till they are ready to ship that slows things down a bit. I wouldn't be surprised if they're still working on it tomorrow so don't freak out if your shipping notice hasn't arrived at the end of today.

I got a personal call from Sweetwater right after I placed my order and was told that Sweetwater wouldn't be receiving them until today (Dec 10). They must not have had your contact info on file. Or maybe I just got in before the flood of orders.

I got mine and finally found a place for it in the studio and hooked it up. I have to say, the Venom has the "total integration" thing going on just like the Access Virus TI. If you just install the drivers, plug it into your laptop, and use it as your only MIDI controller and sound card, it's a pretty sweet setup. You can record the synth output digitally (only 44.1/24-bit though) directly in your DAW, and playback from the DAW directly to the output on the synth.

Also, I was poking around in the editor and I noticed that each sound not only has 3 oscillators, but can also use either left, right, or both external inputs from either analog or USB! So, you could take external sources and filter/effect them, or even take digital audio coming in over USB and run it through the synth.

It's also supposedly a class compliant audio interface, however I haven't tested it with the iPad yet.

I need to dig into sound design in the editor, but I've only had a few hours to play with it so far and I've just been going through presets.

I've been drooling over Access Virus TI2 for a while now, and I feel like I just got something about 75% as good but 10% of the price... :D

About the DAW integration, some people believe (I did so myself before buying one) that you could load up the Venom editor as plugin in your DAW of choice. You can't but it's still a decent editor, despite the lack of updates that worries many.
Audio card is pretty good too. I've been using it a bit while giving my other E-Mu card a rest - I can't really hear any difference between the two. That said, all my 3 hardware synths run through an external mixer so I suppose that ultimately sets the standard in terms of sound quality.

This is good to point out for folks considering getting one. Without the VST plugin you won't be able to save your settings in the DAW. You can still just save your patch and write down the bank and program number on a piece of paper, but I know how much that sucks if you have to load a track you wrote a year or more ago and can't remember which patch you used...

By the way, I'm going to try out the Ableton Live integration that someone posted earlier in this thread, because I believe it gives you everything the VST would give you, including the ability to mod controllers in realtime and save the program changes in your track.

It's $199.99 on Amazon right now, in case anyone missed the Sweetwater sale:

I use Cubase, this has a midi track notepad where I can note Synth - Bank - Preset name/number, this gets saved with the project, surely other DAWS have this feature? :?

Post

Well the Venom has a really good MIDI implementation; virtually is possible to control every aspect of the synth from within the sequencer. Too bad people do not love to mess with sysex data anymore, but for old MIDI nerds like me is the paradise :D

There is also a dump request command, so you can "easily" do a backup in your host* and recall it later.

*Really easy in Sonar.

1900 x $200 = $380,000 :o

Hopefully the packers and handlers will get some extra x-mas bonus :D

Goodbye, Venom, we hardly knew ye.

I kinda want one, but just can't bring myself to buy something I need a computer to edit patches on.

Even though $200 is silly cheap for it.

Ye, it's not very intuitive. But for me it's a cheap keyboard, vst-synth(soon) and mobile-studio interface. I can't stress enough how good the soundcard side is :) The touch is better than on Akai stuff too, which i was considering. I use the keys more than the knobs anyway.
