Personally I think the DX7 sounds warm and phat. Especially the first version with the older DACs. The newer ones like DX7 II and TX816 didn't sound as good.

A lot of analogue synths ended up in charity shops and car boot sales back in the 80's because of this. DX7's weren't at all "cold and harsh" as a lot of people incorrectly describe.

There are many preconceptions about DX7 and the machines of that era, that they can only do thin and brittle sounds.

But I guess that is the kind of sound users wanted in the early 80's. So the presets were done to match that.

And as the DX7 is a not a synth where one can reach new sounds by "happy accidents" like on earlier analouge gear, but require intensive know-how programming, most users where stuck with just using the presets.

Great if you could point me in the direction of youtube videos or other sound examples where DX7 is in the 'phat mode', to hear how that sounds.

So, I take it that there's not CV inputs for everything on the back of this RE?
Remember that you can use a combinator to CV modulate any parameter of any device in Reason, that should get you around to this limitation

Interested in hearing how it sounds as well. I wonder if they've tried to emulate a Yamaha DAC in the output stage..

And whoever says that FM is thin and cant produce "happy accidents"? Both terrible misconceptions IMO! Just had one of the most memorable evenings torturing a DCAM Cypher, talk about happy accidents LOL

It would be cool if there was a version of this without having to have Reason to run it. There is FM8 of course, but it's twice as much $$.

But Reason supports Rewire, so I guess you can Rewire PX7/Reason into the DAW of your own choosing.

I owned an original DX7 and a TX7 and yes they were that cold and harsh......warm and phat are not words I would ever use to describe them......

Well, from Brian Eno to Stevie Wonder, not counting the myriads of soul and funk records it was used on, or Rock bands like Toto, all the FM rock things etc, there are just gazillions records wich show that Dx7 can sound warm, cutting, funky, smooth as silk, creamy and in all cases, sound right in the mix .....

...... in good hands.

+ My Odyssey doesnt sound especially warm, compared to a Model D for example. At least imho. But BIG, yes.

Brian Eno benefited from using the Jellinghaus DX Programmer, which for some reason got a very limited release. It's got instant knob access to almost all of the DX7's parameters, making tweaking of sounds much easier.

Unfortunately it is very expensive, I saw some numbers asking £1500 for a used one

I think the problem in the mid-80's was that users were quiet happy with just playing the presets of the DX7, and too few where interested in programming it. So that Jellinghaus couldn't make good business producing such a controller.
