Dance 1. This piece is totally within his early minimalist composition style like "Einstein on the Beach", but at the same time so incredibly lush and beautiful.
Dance No. 1 performed by: Philip Glass, Farfisa Organ · Michael Riesman, Keyboards · Iris Hiskey, Voice · Jon Gibson, Flute · Jack Kripl, Flute & Piccolo · Richard Peck, Flute.
Dance 3. Well, if there was ever music for The World Didn't End Today and It Goes On, this is it.
Dance No. 3 performed by: Philip Glass, Farfisa Organ · Michael Riesman, Keyboards · Iris Hiskey, Voice · John Gibson, Soprano Sax · Jack Kripl, Soprano Sax · Richard Peck, Alto Sax.

Thanks for the links, love his work. Einstein on the Beach is playing here soon ... tempted to go see it again, with a greater appreciation of his work this time
Peace,
Andy.

North Star is a cool recording with many shorter tunes and keyboard arrangements.
I think it went out of print.

$88.74 for an import copy on Amazon. Jeez. Well, at least I still got it on vinyl - I think. It was his only Island (or Virgin) release. Mike Oldfield covered it, I think.PatchAdamz wrote:North Star is a cool recording with many shorter tunes and keyboard arrangements.

Here, have a Knee Play.

Actually you can buy it on CD on Phil's own OMM label - the album is called "Analog".SODDI wrote:$88.74 for an import copy on Amazon. Jeez. Well, at least I still got it on vinyl - I think. I had the great fortune to see Philip last week playing piano in a church - I was about six fet from him as I was in the front row (no raised stage). He wasn't supposed to be playing but the pianist went sick so Philip stepped in to play his own Etudes.
I also found out that Steve Martland died last week from a dedication by Julia Wolfe in one of her pieces. He's not the best known British composer but I'm a huge fan. RIP Steve.
Funny you picked Dance - one of my faves - saw the staged version a year ago. I once wooed a girl with Dance 3 and 5. As you describe, truly joyous music, hugely uplifting.
If anyone has the chance to see Einstein please do - I saw it twice last year (yes all 4.5 hours of it) after a 25 year wait to see it. Don't be afraid to wander out to the loo as there's no plot to follow and no intervals.
One of my faves:

Interviewed him in London about 30 years ago, shortly before the Ensemble played the Dominion. Their $500 Farfisas had finally given out, and the nearest they could find to replace them were some $5000 Prophets. 'Progress', he called it.
North Star was on Oldfield's 'Platinum' album. (Saw Oldfield in '79 - Incantations and Tubular Bells, with all his usual cohorts plus a small orchestra.)
The 'Thanks to David Byrne' on The Photographer were for the lyrics to 'A Gentleman's Honour'.
Fabulous BBC Composer of the Week interview with him still available as a podcast:
