I'm ready to try anything, so I'll download Vista ones and let you know how it goes. I also have tried disabling power management, indexing and whatever. The funny thing is, that for a few seconds, up to a minute, the sound seems ok. Then the distortion steps in.

The Vista drivers are the same as the Win7 drivers.* I wouldn't hold my breath for Win8 drivers. I think all existing M-Audio interfaces became "legacy" after AVID sold the brand to InMusic. I could be wrong though.
* I'm wrong, a new installer was released for Win7 sp1, earlier this year. Perhaps there is hope for future driver development.

I love my ProjectMix I/O. It's one of the best things they ever made, in my opinion.hibidy wrote:I wonder why maudio never developed this further. I'm pretty sure it's discontinued. I tried to sell mine. Disaster of eBaying. After finding a "temporary" spot to sit it for testing to make sure the jerk buyer didn't hurt it, I decided to keep it anyway. In fact, I've found it very helpful in mixing. Which I guess is the pointhibidy wrote:I wonder why maudio never developed this further. I don't even know if they make them anymore but I always thought that was a terrific unit. It is a nice device. I'm not sure what people think of the mic preamps and I've never had anything fancy to compare to. Anyone have comments on that?
As for development... I think driver development is on hiatus since M-Audio was sold. No new drivers in some time. Likely, the FireWire drivers for most M-Audio stuff is monolithic like NI's audio drivers. If one device is updated, it's likely the others will be too.
