I'm currently saving up to buy a proper string library but I am wondering if anyone knows of something out there that is free that would get me by. I run OSX 10.2.4 on a Mac with Kontakt and ProTools
thanks

I think Kontakt plays soundfonts. If so, look for a free 75MB soundfont called "Instruments SJ Orchestral." Unfortunately, I can't find a link anymore.. I think it was from www.thesoundsite.net which is now defunct.

I found this one called "Squidfont"... I don't know if it's any good, but it is large. :)

There are a number of soundfont threads. I think one had to do with strings.

thanks to all for you suggestions
I couldn't find the SJ orchestral link and the SQidfont link isn't for Mac
Thanks for trying.

Hmm. Sorry about that... Soundfonts (.sf2 files) are mac-compatible... the problem is that the Squid Orchestral soundfont has been compressed with a windows-only compressor (Sfpack). I wish people would just use RAR compression for soundfonts... it's almost as good as Sfarc and Sfpack, but it's cross-platform.

I'll have to pull it down in a day or so, but here's a temporary link to a RAR-compressed version of the Squid font. The file is about 32MB.

To decompress this, you'll need to install a RAR utility for Mac OSX...

I think this one will work, but I've never used it:

Funny how fast some people give up. You won't get anything better for free concerning orchstral sounds.

Thanks garret! :)

Does anyone know where I CAN get SJ Orchestral? I couldn't download when I was on dialup and when I got broadband the soundsite ceased functioning

Well, I'm no DevonB but I think it sounds very good. Very mellow, a bit slow, no disco strings.
Now at last I can play Dvorak's 5th at home :P
Thanks garret.

thanks to everyone for the suggestions. The patch for squidfont is working great. I found another great site for people with Macs. If you go to the Orchestral page you will find a beautiful string sample. It's over the top movie strings with reverb but for certain kinds of stuff they are great. There are lots of other really useful samples on the site. I'll let you know if I discover any more. :D

I was just about to ask the same question. I've searched through so many soundfont websites but couldn't find it. :x

Hey, I went to the link but was confused as to where to find the strings. Would you be able to send me a more specific link. Are these free strings?
Thanks again
