Aether just always sounds light and airy, never thick and lush, no matter what preset I try.
"Thick" and "Lush" is usually associated with heavy modulation which creates (mostly unnatural, but generally pleasant) chorus-like effects in the reverb and smears the spectrum peaks, and expands the bandwidth (which can also result in lots of noise in some designs). In Aether it is important to realize that for the modulation controls we have Depth and PERIOD, and opposed to Depth and Rate.

Period in seconds = 1/rate in Hertz. Period is the inverse of Rate. Generally speaking when rate is faster the effect of modulation is more pronounced. In Aether this means that when Period is SMALLER/shorter modulation is MORE pronounced. This may be somewhat counter-intuitive at first if one is accustomed to having "more" of a knob mean "more" of the effect of the parameter... Indeed we switched to using Rate for Breeze and B2 to avoid confusion.

But in Aether the Period can be incredibly long (up to 500sec) so that modulation is generally not perceivable and more has the effect of changing the geometry of the room very very slowly without producing any bandwidth significant bandwidth expansion, so it seemed to make more sense to use period.

Try short period of less of 1sec, and medium to high mod depth with aether to get lush chorusing effects...

Yes I tried B2 and I thought it was really good, different to Aether.

I am picky with reverbs though, it's as though I don't hear the same way as others, so many like Vroom for example and I've tried but never liked it for long tails. I tried Vintage room immediately and didn't like that either.

So perhaps it's just my odd tastes.
Yes reverb is quite subjective and many people will disagree about what is best etc.

QL Spaces (in spite of iLok) is great for orchestral stuff, but I could make do with VRoom.
I think QL Spaces is really under the radar for the way it just melts with the sound.

I actually like the ArtsAcoustic one but just for some tasks (like thick kick reverb). VRoom and Eos are good also epecially for high hats and sfx but I prefer Ircam Verb as a bus verb.

I like that I can make a space with Verb that can suite any number of tasks as well as create special fx using automation.

Just curious did you ever got the chance to compare the EMpTy Room Systems 250 with the UAD 250 one?

I found it so good on percussion and other sounds and I was amazed by the way it just creates a sensation of real space.

As for the Relab one I think it is also amazing but seeing the price was a major turnoff (I mean Verb can go circles around this for my needs and was a half the price during the sale).
Never tried the Empty Room 250

Yeah, I have VRoom, V3, Shimmer, QL Spaces, Aether, Reverberate w Samplecity IR's, UAD EMT 140 & UAD EMT 250. I also have Breeze, CSR, ArtsAcoustic and EOS which I don't use anymore, so I'm done with reverb for a long while. I would like the UAD Lex 224, but it's too expensive, even on sale given everything else I own.

If I had it to do over I would get the Vahalla stuff, QL Spaces, the UAD EMT's and maybe the UAD Lex - pass on everything else.

If I really got backed into a corner, I could live with VRoom, V3, UAD EMT 140 & UAD EMT 250.

QL Spaces (in spite of iLok) is great for orchestral stuff, but I could make do with VRoom.

I just want to know more about this heavily reverberant "modern German folk music."

Thanks, you saved me the trouble! Although this is a very subtle example... :)

I call it "modern" because nearly all of the real German folk music (with any kind of historical roots) is extinct. What we have nowadays is forgettable singers singing forgettable songs garnished with cheap synth sounds and huge dollops of reverb, presumably to conjure up the feeling of being in the mountains, where life is still wholesome, where women are still women (i.e., obedient house slaves) and men are still men (i.e., leather-decked grunts who can smash a boulder with one hand whilst picking a delicate flower with their other hand).

Rant over. Back to reverbs. :hihi:

Are they presets in Aether ???
Don't trust those with words of weakness, they are the most aggressive

Don't get what the Dolomites on the Italian side, although German speaking, have to do with Westerwald? :hihi:

Oh, well, back to reverbs!

OK, I want to unknow that now. I thought it was a joke, techno, krautrock (pardon the expression), even present company's experimental electronic/electro-acoustic music dynasty, but not that.

That said, I have seen and enjoyed:

Before I get back to a cleansing immersion in wispy ambient music making, a friend pointed out privately that perhaps the Russians have it even worse:

I'm tolerant but not that tolerant - as a young boy there only were 3 TV channels in Germany and this blonde spongehead with the huge black glasses singing over this incredibly shitty music with the Nazi-inspired lyrics was all over them - it's a trauma :D
