While it's a little long in the tooth, when I can't find it in Eleven or AT, there's some things that the Sansamp PSA does that I can't find anywhere else. It's got a very "modern" directness to it that a lot of cab/head+effects sims don't.
Here's some presets that Raaawk!
MXR+
Metallica
American Woman
AC 30 Queen
Super Tweed
I tweak everything to taste and track, but these presets sit HUGE in the mix, even with no processing.

Just post something. I like to hear different people's tones and tastes and how their setups/signal chain sound in comparison to mine.hibidy wrote:blurp. I am spoiled from always using my friend's Badcat Blackcat every time I actually jam and use a real amp when I am at his place. I have the Soldano Hotrod 50 but that thing barely gets turned on at home (needs a re-tube and re-bias especially on lead channel). I guess when I am at home, whenever I have the guitar out, I am too enamored with finding a new inspiring tone with ampsims and then recording a new idea to complete a song or turn into a new one for live jamming purpose. Sometimes I am more inclined to even setup the condenser mic in front of the acoustic guitar too, to see what kind of layering and ideas I can add to stuff or new ideas that come about when you don't have to bother with an ampsim. You can sometimes be more creative and productive in that sense. I don't like to double track acoustic guitar straight up like you would a distorted guitar part. I try to think of different chord inversions/triads and riffs/leads I can play over the part I just did and do subtle layering which just seems to work differently on the acoustic.@midnight wrote:i like the red and blue plexi's in guitar rig, use them for just about everything.
used to own a real 1959slp and i had extensive mods to circuit done, including replacing the stock output transformer with a c1998 dagnall which is the same they used from 1968 to 1970. i used to crank it to 5-7, sometimes I would even dime the volume on both channels if I was mad at the band. with the EQ dimed, presence on 5 or 6... it was like you could swim in the tone. talk about dimension. the dynamic response to picking was just unreal, forget multi channel amps, its unneccesary with a cranked plexi, the range from clean to all out distortion just from picking dynamics is incredible.
the guitar rig plexi's arent even close but they are what I use for now. they are a lot better than amplitubes marshalls. the softube virtual amp is pretty close, not an actual plexi though its a JCM800 model and it's really good.

Hmm. Software-wise, none of them sound like real amplifiers mic'd up in a room to me. I've tried them all, and TH-2 was the closest to a real amp for me. Amplitube and Guitar Rig don't sound like real mic'd up amps in a real room to me, and Revalver development seems dead in the water.
I've heard the Axe-FX A/B'd with Amplitube 3, and the Axe just totally killed AT3 in every way. Tons more resonance, tons more clarity and brutality. I've also used the Kemper, and I was well impressed with it.
I've heard really good stuff come out of the Pod HD500 too, but I just don't really want to buy one when 9 times out of 10 I use my real amp anyway - Orange Rockerverb, Laney VH100R, or my latest (and favourite) the Marshall JVM410HJS - the Satriani edition.
So I think there is a long way to go for software based modellers. An Axe FX or Kemper running on my i7 would be sweet, but I have a feeling they'd totally kill the CPU!
If I was going to buy a unit, and only needed it for studio work, I'd get a Kemper.
Oh, and FWIW, I think it's the cab section in Amplitube that lets it down. It sounds so much better when you disable it and run the output through the Redwirez impulses. I have Recabinet, but the cabs sound way too dark to me, so I don't use em.

I can understand why all soft ampsims sound bad to you becouse your real amps are very good...Im using much cheaper alternatives and still have the same feeling as you...BUT I disagree that Axe sounds any better than any other software...the difference between them is only in IRs they are using-if you use the same Redwirez IRs in Amplitube 3 you will be surprised how much closer it will sounds...Amberience wrote:Hmm. also I dont undestand your love for Kemper - I can clearly hear same harsh overtones as with other ampsims - these are NEVER coming out of real tube amp in good conditions...
disagree here again - it will work like a charm on todays CPUs...! They are just average piece of software in hw box, nothing special at all except the price, if ported to plugin form nobody will ever buy them for more than say 400 euros...Amberience wrote: So I think there is a long way to go for software based modellers. Interesting. Not sure how your reply has anything to do with what I wrote about plexi's and Guitar Rig, but, cheers!metalifuxx wrote:I am spoiled from always using my friend's Badcat Blackcat every time I actually jam and use a real amp when I am at his place. hibi, could go for 'a/b/c/d/e' testing or whatever.
maybe play something low and something high... check how each sim handles low (wound strings) and high (unwound strings) notes.
one thing i've been messing with for just the past few days, is to 'high shelf' the untreated signal, before it goes into the ampsim.
on normal settings, i get a lot of 'grain' or 'sand' amidst the 'highs' with ampsims. it seems that if the highs are 'smoothed out', the ampsim sounds to be more 'buttery'.
whatever the case of that... sometimes with ampsims i'm like, 'whoah that almost sounds good/real'. other times it's like, 'wow, how did that other band get such a great guitar recording/tone?'. like someone was saying, it probably helps mightily to have great playing technique, and signal chain.
still, i think maybe 'rolling off the highs' in a digital domain could be useful to just about anyone.
my favorite is probably poulin/lepou lextac. i'll use simulanalog in a 'low-cpu' situtation, otherwise it's nearly always poulin; and lately, mostly soloc or lextac.
even with my sub-optimal signal chain and playing technique, sometimes these sims actually sound 'real', if only for a moment here and there.
one thing i've probably mentioned before; the way some of these sims handle, say 2 or 3 wound strings ('power chord') playing together, versus how they handle single high notes on the unwound strings; sometimes i swear it's almost like night and day; as if some sims can't really do both high and low well on the same settings. i guess multiple wound strings on an overdriven amp has always been at least a bit of a no-no, particularly if the player introduces a 3rd into the mix; but real amps seem to handle it better than sims in any event.
it would be so cool to have something like a vinnie vincent setup, with 2x200 watt carvins in a basement, along with 4x4x12 cabs; just crank that up and record! on the other hand, these ampsims allow those of us without studio space/soundproofing to record, and almost sound real.
but yeah, hibidy, a test would be cool.

Right now it's Headcase 1.54, at3, and my Boss GS-10 with it's built in stuff. My Boss GS-10 sounds beautiful and since it's hardware I have no latency or CPU usage issues in Reaper, Cubase, or Logic 9 on my Mac.
If you can find a Boss GS-10 on Ebay - Grab It - it's one fine interface for both my Mac & my Win 7 laptop (actually I also run Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit on my new Mac Mini using Bootcamp too). It's also a fantastic stand alone practice amp (I use headphones with it - no computer needed).
also use my Jamvox and Mustang I amp in Reaper a lot too.

Now the proud owner of an avid 11 Rack, Running Pro Tools 10.3.3 - for me it's heaven!

mrblitz, has a huge point here,"one thing i've probably mentioned before; the way some of these sims handle, say 2 or 3 wound strings ('power chord') playing together, versus how they handle single high notes on the unwound strings; sometimes i swear it's almost like night and day; as if some sims can't really do both high and low well on the same settings. i guess multiple wound strings on an overdriven amp has always been at least a bit of a no-no, particularly if the player introduces a 3rd into the mix; but real amps seem to handle it better than sims in any event. An SOS review of studio devil amp,had acompanying audio clips of the direct guitar used in the review.I downloaded the clips, sent them through the ampsims and they all came to life.Presets that sounded like shit with my guitar sample libraries, sounded great with a real guitar, that was recorded with a focusrite isa pre amp.
Hibidy, I've heard your stuff,I like your guitar work, so go ahead and post!

Nah, there's a ton of TNC in there.
Anyways I've got the template set up, I just need to come up with some not too bad guitar parts and then get them rendered. I haven't decided if it would be any better to do individual or have it kinda strung together. I think strung together would be best because it's just too big a pain to do individual clips.
It's gonna be a secret test though
