Being responsible for the naming of, and maybe even planting the seed for a Valhalla Vintage Verb in Sean's head back in May (inception anyone?)...

The first C++ files with the name "ValhallaVintageVerb" date from early 2010. ValhallaRoom was originally going to be ValhallaVintageVerb, until I decided that the algorithms I had in there were not that great, so I trashed all the audio code and started over. The current iteration of ValhallaVintageVerb has the name in common with that early work, and that's about it.

I wasn't really trying to claim credit Sean, just having some fun. With the concept for the plugin, that's the only name that makes sense anyway. And based on your reply in that thread, it sounded like you were already working on it...

Now hurry up and feel better so you can start on the next plugin.

Sorry. This flu has left me humor impaired. I can fill orders and read the forums, but any sort of advanced joke processing is beyond me right now. *beedle boop robot noises*

It's a GOOD name, even if it is a little too literal. With something like "ValhallaÜberMod" you don't know what the plugin does (although it is hard to explain that one anyway). Meanwhile, "ValhallaVintageVerb" should make it immediately clear what I am going for.
Now hurry up and feel better so you can start on the next plugin.
I'm spending the rest of 2012 on the "feel better" part...

Here's a demo of the more subtle side of ValhallaVintageVerb. The raw sound file is Don Gunn on drums (recorded by Don Gunn at Don Gunn's studio - I was sitting on the couch being quiet).

Dry drums:

Drums processed by the Ambience algorithm in ValhallaVintageVerb:

Drums processed by the Tiled Room preset (IIRC) in VeeThree, which uses the Chamber algorithm:

Moog Rogue (Vangelis/Numan lead) and Arturia Minibrute (bass). Both are processed by the Random Space algorithm in ValhallaVintageVerb.

The Random Space algorithm is interesting to me, in that it doesn't cause the "sideband spread" that can be heard in most of the other VeeThree algorithms. The modulation used in Random Space is closer to what is found in granular synthesis, and could almost be viewed as a "granular reverb." At low Mod Rate frequencies, it is very hard to hear any artifacts from this modulation.

However, this modulation is also more subtle than the 224-style chorusing that is heard in most of the VeeThree algorithms. The "random" modulation preserves the pitch better, but it doesn't produce as much "depth" to my ears as the chorusing modulation, and can sound a little flatter. This is why I included the Chorus Space algorithm in VeeThree, which is identical to the Random Space algorithm, except that it uses chorusing modulation as opposed to the "random" modulation.

My guess is that the "random" style modulation, as used in the 480L Random Hall, became THE sound of vocal ballads in the 1990s and 2000s. I haven't listened to a whole lot of vocal ballads to confirm or deny this theory, I've heard Random Space on female vocals, and it does sound really nice.

:D

A few things I have noticed about your last few VeeThree examples:

- You seem to be backing off of the Early Diffusion. This will create a bit more "grain," and can also make for a more interesting early decay.

- The DAMPING Bass Mult is turned up, which helps in simulating a larger space. In a real hall, the lower frequencies have a considerably longer decay rate than the mid and high frequencies.

Thanks Fritze! My fever has dropped today, so I think I should be up to speed in the next few days. Happy 2013 to you and yours!
