I liked C the best, but I must be weird because A was my second favorite. I liked the "resonant" sort of sound.

Post

I didn't particularly care for any of them, but if I had to pick I'd say B sounded most "organic" to me.

I'm glad someone other than me is doing this :hihi:

sorry, but no /at least no this time/

here you have picked maybe the most difficult task for all ampsims - a lot of natural feedback can be heard in Gilmours tone...but in your examples there is only awfull amount of dead compression, nothing alive and nothing lovely :(

please - get real tube amp, learn feedback and try again - than Im sure you can play it as good as David!
Kvaca...natural feedback is absent because I've played this with headphones (on the fly btw...)...I can assure you that playing it on studio monitors (I'll try to play it again at the studio with my Yamaha MSP7 if i'll have the time...) you can do the feedback thing with amp sims also ;-)...for sure not so loooooooooooong but this has nothing to do with the Amp Sims modeling quality...it's a "physical" thing....even with REAL amps you simply can't do Gilmour-like feedback without play really LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUD :-D

I have had real tube amps (various...)and I've learned the feedback thing a loooooooooooooot of time ago  but I can assure you that even now that I've a Yamaha DG80, that is a modeling amp (an AWESOME sounding guitar amplifier, i think it is head and shoulder above modern "toys" and on par with the most "famous amps"...) not a tube amp, i have a beautiful feedback and beautiful soustained notes....if I play loud obviously...:D
Ok,I'll correct myself - get your yamaha, use feedback and try again - this kind of solo deserves it
/or stick with headphones and get sustainiac pickup or guitar resonator...I have both exactly for doing this kind of solo stuff on PC/

and I know it has nothing to do with ampsims modelling quality, but it has a lot to do with guitar tone quality :D

I really liked B. C is my second favorite. Maybe with more gain it could sound better than B.

Post

Hmm. Honestly? They all sounded a bit un-natural to me and they're all very similar too. I suspect its the RAT emulation pedal you're using. I didn't particularly like any of the tones, although I thought the playing was good.

To me, they all sounded way too upfront and direct, with not enough natural "air" moving in the recording. Also for something like this, I'd probably tend to go for a slightly thinner sounding tone. But these all have a sort of lo-mids muddy build up that just gets in the way of the core tone.

Post

A sounds gritty and harsh.

B and D are quite similiar, pretty nasal sounding.

C sounds muddy and boxy.

I guess best of the bunch would be D, since it seems to have a little more meat than B, but it's also a bit harsher.

Post

Uhmm...seems there is a preference for C, until now...

...however the strange thing is that some of you refers to the all sounds as "muddy", the user Eleven think instead they are "harsh", Metallifuxx thinks A and C nailed the tone....so,what if i say, at this point, that one of the four maybe a REAL guitar amplifier?...let's say....uhmm...a mic'ed Fender Twin? Maybe? Or not? :D

The one I don't like is C.

 that's how you get 'em. I was thinking of doing the same thing with my amp after seeing this thread. Haters are going to hate until....:hihi:

I haven't used the other emulations, but Simulanalog Twin and I also guess B used that one. Something natural fatness about it.

C-pretty good, but they all sound digital to me, but B.

Thanks for this test - fun thing to do on a holiday.
:)
Uhmm...we have differents tastes...to me is the "worst" of the bunch...
but....i don't think none of the four sounds "digital"; instead i think amp sims reached a really really really good level
Here the original played from David "God" Gilmour for comparison:

I agree, B sounds worst to me as well. I think A was the most realistic and organic sounding of the bunch.

Now that I listen to them again I'd say there's something flat about them everything except A. Maybe it's the best sounding after all, but still too fizzy for my liking. I like the playing though. 8)

BTW you should check out the Duke model in Scuffham S-Gear. Maybe add that to the list for comparison when you reveal which one is which?

Post

B then C (B is slightly dirty but has more 'body'), they are very close anyway
I like both

D and A are too weak, imo

Wouldn't change my opinion. It'd just mean you failed on dialing in the amp, or micing it up. :P

Which you like more? Who do you think is is who?
:)
Without a fixed standard to go by, I might not use those terms unless speaking
of accoustic instruments. My organic theory is that we love electric guitars
and amps because they give us sonic crunch, simulating the satisfying sounds
and feelings made when munching peanuts, carmelcorn, or crisp oreos
(all three at once is quite a nice feast :hihi: )
The 'breakup' and woofer thump reminds of a good boxing match,
other nuances point to the crack of splitting firewood, or the crackling of
a home fireplace. So to me, while perhaps not accoustic, organic, or realistic,
it all stands on it's own, very natural and good. :)
Cheers
