I use Timeless the most by far. However I can if it were not my goto delay then it would be either RP-Delay or MFM2. In fact, those two really do so much more than a standard delay.

MFM2 doesn't quite make it on the "easily understandable" front. If that counts, I'm going to suggest Ohmboyz. In the funky skin.

One of my favs (and very often the one i go to first) is KR-Delay FS. A fine delay even if you only use whats on the regular UI, and even more useful when you start digging into the params that are only accessible via the hosts generic UI.

Take the PingPong for example. Normally you only get the usual Ping=Left / Pong=Right in that mode. (Intensity/Direction via Pan knob.) However, since the generic UI allows you to set all Left side and Right side params separately regardless of the selected mode, you can create non-standard effects such as Ping=Center / Pong=Right (or Left) and anything in between. Even having Ping and Pong at the same side is possible that way, e.g. Ping=100%Left, Pong=50%Left.

Another example is the filters in PingPong mode. Since in PingPong mode access to the right side of the signal path is disabled on the regular UI, its either HP or LP for both sides. However, if you use the generic UI you can override that limitation and set Left=HP / Right=LP (or vice versa) and then use the frequency knob to do HP/LP Left/Right filter sweeps.


The generic UI also allows you to enable a Bandpass filter thats not there on the regular UI, and you can do crazy stuff like enabling different filter types at the same time, etcetera. You get the idea. If youre willing to experiment (and get over the notion that it cant be good because its free) you can do a lot of cool stuff with this delay. A good way to try this stuff out (and to save the useful results into presets) is to use it in VSTHost because VSTHost has a real good generic UI which also allows you to input exact numerical values via the keyboard. (Although you probably wont need to do that with this particular plugin.)

Timeless2 is my go-to tape delay plugin. I have Uhbik & MFM2 @ filterscape when I feel like getting more creative.

I really like the routing in the fabfilter stuff, so I can easily patch up what I want quickly in timeless2 and other fabfilter plugins. Also the sound is pretty amazing too! One thing i can think that timeless has that some of the others dont have alot of is a full featured filter section! You get 2 multi-mode filters which you can automate and push into self-resonance! This can be used to saturate the delay for *emulating* the sounds of vintage style echo delays.

The downside to timeless is that it might be too complex for some.


I have demoed the Echoboy plugin, and I really like how you can edit the saturation types to *emulate* other types of tape heads. Feature wise it does offer a "easier" interface to dial in a specific tape echo style delay and I would definitely agree that it is a badass delay plugin and better for people who don't want to deal with a modular interface.

Ubermod is another great easy to use delay plugin too! It can create some pretty amazing Chorus/flanger style effects as well.


Uhbik-D is great and easy to use, and can create some very grungy echo sounds! I like the sound of it on electric pianos!

MFM2 is awesome, but it is also kind of overwhelming to people who are used to a basic delay. You can get very freaky with this one !! One of the upsides to MFM2 is the filters are pretty good!

Filterscape is wild! You can basically creating morphing multi-band filters and throw in delays..

GSI GS-201 and NastyDLA for tape style delays, RP-Delay and Fruity Delay Bank for, well, all other kind of delay sounds!

RP-Delay, both feature- and soundwise. I tried Kjaerhus Classic Delay (awful sound, dunno why, all mashed up... probably due to the lack of EQing), TAL-Dub and Cubase' built-in Ping-Pong-Delay, and several built-in delays, like from z3ta+, ZebraCM and some other synths, but they all didn't match RP-Delay.

Could you elaborate, or describe the test you used to arrive at this conclusion? I wouldn't expect a delay to cause aliasing, unless it was also acting as a tape sim, which I realize some do. But surely FabFilter know how to do saturation right (or does Saturn generate aliasing too?).

fabfilter's filter code generates aliasing under certain circumstances. also, heavy modulation of the parameters under certain circumstances.

yes, fabfilter saturn also generates aliasing, as does every single saturation plug. fabfilter has a HQ 8x oversampling mode on Saturn which renders the aliasing virtually inaudible in all but the most extreme (and I mean *trying to break the plugin* extreme) type of situations.

that why I keep saying Fabfilter should add a simple HQ switch on an update for all the plugins that don't currently have it. i think even 2x oversampling would be enough to remove the aliasing from Timeless and Volcano.
