Hey guys

I'm thinking about getting some new headphones to use with my iPad. I've been using my Beyerdynamic DT 990's which sound great but are bulky and impractical for a mobile setup. So, just wondering what people are using. Something light and portable with a flattish response would fit the bill. I'm flexible on budget but am interested in bargains as well as premium products!

So fire any recommendations this way please!

Thanks :-)

Hi Saz,

I'd be interested in what people are using too! I'm not using mastering / flat response headphones, just some Senheisser px100, which are really fun to listen to, bu definitely not for mixing/mastering. One thing that u should remember is that comfort is just as important as sound quality/response. It doesn't matter if u have the highest quality phones in the world, if they start burrowing into your head after 1 minutes use..! ;)

All the best <3

I am using AlphaLine studio headphones....I got into a bind when my regular pair broke and needed a quick replacement. I was skeptical at first (I bought them at Kmart of all places) but they have great sound, self adjusting, and lightweight despite their size.
$40 here's the link http://www.kmart.com/alphaline-trade-st ... ockType=G2
Rock On!

Thanks for the replies. The alphaline looks interesting and a bargain too, but unfortunately they're not available in the uk... Any other suggestions?

If it's just for listening duties, I got some Sennheiser HD202's recently for less than £20, and they're pretty stunning for the money.

Audio Technica ATH-CKS55i

This is an inner ear earphone, which means the ear buds fit directly into your ear canal for great noise isolation. Frequency response from 5hz-24000hz - they sound amazing. I've made a couple tracks using them - even though obviously headphones are not the best for monitoring - these ones have solid bass response and give you a great feel for the bottom end in your track.

This is also the "i" version which has a microphone and volume up/down play/pause controls for iOS devices.

I use Sony MDR V6

You can find them for around £60 on amazon, they fold nicely and they are good for mixing.
Only thing they have an impedance of 63 ohms which might be a bit too much for an ipad.

Thanks for all the input guys, keep em coming! Also, I can recommend for listening (not mixing/mastering) the Jaybird Freedom (the regular version, not the expensive smaller new one, nor the Sprint), especially while exercising :)

Will be checking out the ATH-CKS55i Storms <3

Bang for the buck, the Grado headphones are hard to beat. Grado has many models, but even the entry one, the SR60, sounds great. They are fairly solid. Some people find that they look funny, though - like an old telegraph gear.

On travel, for use with the iPad, I bring one set of those in my luggage (the Grado can be set flat, so they do not require much space), and some in-ear from Shure in the plane, for sound isolation.

Thanks for ur reply hersisson612 :)

How comfortable are the SR60s though? (Sometimes those style of headbands are really tight & dig into my head!)

Post

Me too I wonder about the grado, I've heard a lot of good things but never tried them(never found them in a shop in france or italy).

How do you hear with them in a noisy place? Cuz they're open right?

Post

Despite their look, the 60 are comfortable due to their pads. It's the type of headphones I could wear for many hours without any problem. The 60 are a bit colored, but I never heard of someone complaining about their type of coloration - not like the cheaper Sennheisers, as an example. And for the price, they are a bargain. For a more neutral sound, you would need to go with the 225, but they are much more expensive.

But they are not for noisy places, since they are open. For really noisy places, the solution is with in-ear ones. The SE535 Shure are good, but they cost an arm and a leg. I know some Etymotic users that claim that they are sounding very good for less $$$ .

Thanks for the clarification hersisson612 :) One last thing are we talking the 'i' versions, ie the SR60i & the SR225i? (On Amazon, they say that the i stands for 'improved'!).

Also, I haven't tried them, but Audio Technica ATH M40 are supposed to be good.. (if u buy make sure to get a 1/4" female to 1/8" male adapter too)

Post

The "i" is the latest version of the headsets. Improved? Maybe - if they say so :). I have own the two versions, and I did not see much differences between them.

Thanks for the reply H - will be checking them out soon! <3
